TRUST ME, this is one of the best sushi experiences you'll have in LA! I say experience, because that's really what Sugarfish is. For those unfamiliar, Sugarfish offers 'set menus' as a full meal. They are delivered one by one to your table so you eat each fresh and truly enjoy the flavor. I can't stress enough how delicious and true to Japanese tradition this is, as well as just being a really fun and unique experience. The regular 'Trust Me' set will set you back about $25-$30 (lunch to dinner variation), but you will get enough food and it will be worth it. Things to note is that Sugarfish DOES NOT take reservations, so expect dinner time and weekends to be super super super busy. Either prepare for an 1.5+ hour wait, or try it out during lunch or weekday hours. Also, PRO TIP! Ask your server about the 'birthday' deal that the have. If you sign in (aka leave your email) with them twice within a year before your birthday, your birthday dinner will be on them!

3.5 stars. The quality of the food was great BUT the subpar service took away from my being able to enjoy everything. It'd been some months since I last went to Sugarfish in Santa Monica so I was stoked to have lunch here. However...it just didn't live up to my expectations, and I felt I had overhyped it to my company. The quality was good but I think it was the service and timing that affected our experience. We both ordered the Trust Me and added some more sushi (albacore belly, large scallop, sweet shrimp, and unagi), because...we are hungry little piggies. No sooner had we gotten our edamame did we also get the tuna sashimi. I, always being up for a challenge, commenced to devour the tuna sashimi and then quickly shovel edamame into my mouth. That set the tone for the whole meal. I found I was constantly shoveling sushi into my mouth, instead of being allowed to simply savor each mouthful, because the plates kept coming out like a baseball pitching machine. By the time the last hand roll came, I was stuffed and done for. I also didn't really get to chat with my company, because my mouth was full the whole time. I felt the staff rushed our service so they could get us out quicker, although there wasn't a wait when we'd gotten there. Also, it was kind of a bummer that they didn't have any toro or Uni sushi. *sniff, sniff* I like Sugarfish but I just don't see myself coming back to this particular location (which is rather tiny so I don't recommend it for groups). Luckily there are so many other Sugarfish locations, so it's not a total bust.

The rice! The fish! The flavor! It definitely lived up to my expectation and to all the hype. I thought I wouldn't be full, but it was so filling. I ordered the 'trust me' and my friend ordered the larger one. We ended up sharing the additional 4 rolls that she got so it worked out perfectly. They were also very accommodating. I had read many reviews beforehand so I knew the blue crab handroll had mayo in it. I do not eat mayo (yuck). I let the server know before I ordered and he told me not a problem- that I could substitute for any of the other handrolls with the exception of the lobster. I ordered the yellowtail. Everything from the edamame to the ginger and wasabi was delicious and fresh. I cannot wait to go back! FYI-I parked in the lot across the little side street. It's typically $7 for valet or $3 if you are going to Sugar Fish. Make sure they validate the ticket before you leave. They do not seat you until everyone in your party is present. We got there around 6:15pm on a Thursday and were seated right away.

My friend raves about this place so much so I had to go try it for myself. There are no reservations and the restaurant is super small too so that is already a downside. Being from OC, I hate the fact that parking sucks and we had to pay $3 to park in the lot next the to the restaurant. My friend and I waited 45 mins so we did not eat till about 9:00pm on a Saturday night. We sat at the bar since we were super hungry and did not want to wait for a table. My friend got the Trust Me($30) and I got the Trust Me Light ($20). The quality of the fish is pretty good but I think they over do it with the rice. There is soooo much rice, especially in the rolls. I'm so use to eating handrolls with other things inside of it like the veggies but this just has the fish itself and rice...LOTS OF HOT THICK RICE! I was not a fan of that. I think I could have paid a few more dollars and do an AYCE and get my sushi craving satisfied. I don't think I would ever come back here again. Not worth it.

Always fresh and simple sushi! Sugarfish really focuses on the quality of the fish, without all the fancy rolls. You can't go wrong with any of the Trust Me's. The Nozawa box is perfect for sharing, as it gives you a wide variety of fish to try. My personal favorite is the blue crab hand roll. Also a fan of the toro and sashimi. I realy enjoy their Nigori Sake as well! The to-go boxes provide you with instructions that tell you which sauces to use with each fish...very informative. This location seems to have a shorter wait than others I've been to. But get to any Sugarfish early to avoid a long wait, as they do not take reservations. My preference is sitting at the bar!

People don't understand the concept and become annoyed when they don't get their side of rice, or tempura teriyaki glazed popcorn shrimp. Sugarfish is exceptionally consistent. This location is good, but almost too small. They were very kind when messing up a to go order and offered me an extra free cut roll for my trouble. I was finishing a meal at the bar, and it was around 9:55pm (they close at 10) and some women next to me were still in the middle of their service. They guys in the kitchen were mopping up and cleaning, and the smell of the kitchen wafted right into the bar area. For sushi, so fresh, where nuance and a clean palette are paramount to the dining experience, that is hard to ignore. Luckily I was on the tail end of my service, and the women next to me were seated at a vacant table. Other than that you can't go wrong with any Sugarfish.

Hands down the best sashimi I've ever had!!! Super fresh and great quality. Everything was perfectly pre-sauced and the fish just melts in your mouth! (Take the waitress' advice and don't dip the sushi in soy sauce) Even the rice is exquisite! My boyfriend and I came for lunch on Valentine's Day around 12 and the restaurant was pretty empty. But 15 minutes later it was packed and they even had people waiting out the door. The restaurant itself is really modern looking and service was great. We both ordered the trust me which came with edamame, tuna sashimi, salmon sushi (2pc), albacore sushi (2pc), one piece of yellowtail and one piece of halibut, toro handroll, and a blue crab hand roll. They bring you one dish at a time so you can really enjoy each one individually which was nice. It didn't look like much on the plate but it actually was pretty filling. I usually just stick to salmon and tuna because those are the only raw fish I've ever tried (I've always been afraid of other fish tasting too "fishy" or oceany) but this set meal gave me the opportunity to try other fish that I've never had before. Once again everything was superb! If I could I would eat this for every meal of everyday. Would definitely come back! They need to open one of these up north! This was the perfect spot to start off our Valentine's Day after driving the 6 hrs to LA.

Must update review. The last time I came here was when it first opened. I left a not so great review due to a few issues, but my visit here yesterday reminded me of why this place would be where I come for my last meal before I die. Rice was perfect. Fish was perfect. Tried the halibut fin for the first time and it was amazing. A little lemon and a little salt go a long way! Soo gooddd. Service was perfect. Everything. Perfect. I love you Sugarfish. I like this location better than the DTLA one now, for several reasons. Parking is much easier. It feels like a slightly bigger space, but still nice and cozy and intimate. Manager and staff were great.

The hype is real! The nigiri was DELICIOUS. The fish was the perfect texture and the rice is the best tasting sushi rice I have ever had! Service could be more attentive especially since when I dined there they were only at about 80% capacity but other than that I will be back!

My friend was visiting LA for the first time, and for her last night in town she wanted sushi. We got to the restaurant at around 5:30, it was already almost full, but we were seated immediately. The decor was beautiful and calm, exactly what we wanted after a day of shopping. Service was prompt and friendly, and remained excellent throughout our meal. While the restaurant is small, and was packed while we were there, it was never uncomfortably full, and we weren't rushed at any point. The food itself was delicious. My husband was not a huge fan of sashimi going in, but I convinced him to split the "Trust Me" with me. Every portion was delicious, fresh, and perfectly seasoned, and now my husband is a believer. The $30 price for the amount and quality of food we got was very reasonable, particularly since it was split between two people. My friend got the salmon roll, and said it was amazing. Parking on La Brea was nuts, until we found the lot across the street from the restaurant. $3 if you get your parking ticket validated by Sugarfish, and we pulled right into a spot. We will definitely be coming back here.

Went here today to get some take out sushi. Even if the store is not that busy and there is 8 people in the kitchen making sushi, it still took an hour to receive my trust me. On top of that the customer service is terrible. They have no idea how to run a good system for their take out orders. At the end of the day those are quick sales that just benefit the restaurants sales. Unfortunately they have no idea what to do. All they do is kick you out after making you pay for your order. And they try to make sure you wait outside the bars. What kind of non sense is that? At the end of the day the fish is just mediocre, served with good rice. Other than that its no different than the average fish you an get at lower end.sushi joints like sushi stop.

I came here this weekend based off of a recommendation from Stacey L. for me and my boyfriends six month anniversary (I know, so simp but idgaf) hahaha. Anyways. We got here after we went to Griffith Observatory and we waited about 45 minutes. From 8:15-9:00 pretty much on the dot. They do not take reservations sadly. We got here, and this location is right on the corner across from the parking lot. There is outside seating to wait, the actual restaurant is pretty small, hence the wait. But I was adamant on trying this place so I made my grumpy guy wait heehee. We looked over the menu while we waited and decided on getting the 2 of the Nozawa Trust Me dinner sets. The three options are Trust me Lite (smalll) $20 Trust me (Medium) $30 Nozawa Trust me (Large) $40 The ambiance at night is dimly lit, very romantic and perfect as a less fancy schmancy anniversary dinner. I wore the clothes I wore to six flags earlier that day which was fine, but I also saw girls wearing like dresses. So it's really up to you, its dark so nobody really cares. lol. Start: Edamame- I don't know if it was because I was hungry or what but their edamame was super good and I couldn't stop eating. Finished it off real quick Tuna Salad: It looked like Poke but it tasted delicious and sweet Sushi: Part 1: Snapper, Albacore, Salmon - Yum, I really liked all three of these and the rice is warm and delicious and different. The sushi that is pre-sauced don't need add additional shoyu. Part 2: Hamachi, Halibut, and Daily Special (Scallops) - This course I was more middle about, they were still good, but the halibut and scallops were sauced with this kinda spicy sauce that I was not as into, the taste was interesting but still good, not what I was expecting. Hand Rolls: Toro: YUMMMM can never go wrong with Toro Crab: I really liked this one but at this point I was so full my boothang had to finish it for me. WARNING: THEY ARE BIGGER THAN THEY APPEAR IN PICTURES. Overall, I love sushi and I really think that it was a good deal for 12 pc's of nigiri in additional to the handrolls, edamame, and tuna sashimi. Would not mind coming here again when I come to LA next time.

Stopped in for DineLA. They have one set menu which comes with about 6-7 pieces of sushi for $20. Enough for one person. If you're really hungry, it might not be enough. They were a bit slow bringing out each dish. A different person brings each person's dish. Maybe because we had a big table but I was anxious for more food. The quality of fish was awesome. Really enjoyed the scallop and salmon sushi. Would recommend going at 11:30 when they open so there is no waiting. Place can get filled quickly at lunch. They also have a small bar in the front for faster seating.

Best sushi in La. Love the warm rice that is served with the sushi. All the sushi just melts in your mouth. I always share the trust me menu with one other person. The portion is perfect not too much or too little. I also order the scallop cut roll. Today's sushi special was toro and it was the best thing I have ever had. They charge 4 dollars more for that. The service is awful no one cares when you get your food or if you are being serviced. The reason is because service is already included. I have been to the sugarfish in Brentwood, Dtla, Marina del Rey, and they all had bad service. I would have given this place 5 stars if the service was good.

Allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is HOV. Can I start by saying I love Nozawa, and for the first year or so downtown Sugarfish was epic and great. I hear Brentwood was/is great, too. But those who eat and know real sushi knows that this is not real sushi. Period. The fish is brought in a van in the morning to the various Sugarfish locations already cut. So... That's where we'll start. Second, the rice at this location is way, way too hot. Warm is one thing... Our nigiri rice was HOT. Third, it was 3 pm... And the kitchen was backed up as if it were the dinner rush. We waited an extremely long time in between "courses." The lady next to us ordered sushi a la carte one by one and for some reason her sushi came asap. Who knows. Finally, I asked for tuna cut roll. They brought me a toro roll... After being reminded they forgot it. Than I said I ordered tuna, not toro. "Tuna is toro" they scolded. Yeah, no shit, lady! It's a different part of the fish, and had I wanted the fatty part Id have ordered toro! Listen, if you're looking for budget Omakase, this is your jam. If you want the real deal in LA, there are far better places.

I lived in Japan for 2 years. This is by far the best sushi I've had in the world! However, the waits are terribly long and can deter from eating here. They don't take reservations so if you get lucky you might get seated in 45 minutes. Meanwhile, my partner and I took a walk down La Brea. Lots of window shopping :)

I miss Nozawa, I loved sitting at the Sushi bar and being attended to by the Sushi master. Premium wonderful traditional sushi. The quality is still top notch, no pop sushi, thankfully, but the ambience is gone.

Sugarfish is my absolute fave! The sushi here is always so delicious and mouth-watering. Even better that it is quite affordable especially when you know what kind of quality you are getting! Salmon sushi: always my favorite. the natural flavor of the fish complements the warm sushi rice. Getting all the omegas from here Eel sushi: I always have been a big fan of eel..NOT EEL SAUCE though. This place does it right. no eel sauce at all. The buttery taste just makes me you want to eat another order of eel sushi. Large scallops: the ponzu (?) sauce, or some sauce that brings the scallop together makes this dish phenomenal. The light springy taste enrages your mouth to make you go " WOW." Blue crab roll: the full flavor of blur crab roll definitely leaves you wanting more. The taste of the blue crab has a distinct taste but yet it is so delicious.

Parking: It was a Sunday 5:00pm, I got street parking right outside the restaurant, so no complaint. My friend parked at the lot nearly by. Service: The servers were nice but a bit "out of it." They got our order mixed up, e.g. instead of one toro roll and one blue crab roll they just gave us two blue crab rolls. Ordered Ikura, it never came, so I had to reordered twice before it came. Food: The menu is very simple and I like it. My friend had the omakase plus bunch of other sushi. I had bunch of sushi. Ikura: I didn't like it. It lack the sweetness of good ikura. Uni: Good but not great. All the other fishes were so so, except the blue crab hand rolls were very good. I'm not a big fan of the over "seasoned" warm rice, and the rice fell apart. I'm generally not a fan of the sugarfish join, we were going to go to Katsuka after a show but they weren't open yet. Price: A bit costly for the quality. Probably won't come back unless like this time, all the other places were not yet open, for some reason they don't have an afternoon break hours.

Fresh, simple, delicious and fast. The food is consistently delicious, it's so easy to order because you get to choose from three sized portions (incase you don't feel like ordering an item at a time. The staff is ALWAYS friendly and efficient. The only complaint is that the space isn't big enough for all the customers that want to come in. There is usually a 15-40 min wait since there is no reservations taken. Try to go on non peak hrs during the week so you don't have to wait at all. Sadly no dessert is served here :( Parking always available

The best sushi I ever ate in my life! I am gonna rate it with 4 stars only because it can take forever to wait in line. I would definitely suggest it, but if you are not willing to wait 1/2 hours in line, don't go on a weekend!

This restaurant is fast becoming my go-to for a fail proof sushi lunch. I have come here multiple times around noon and even though this restaurant is on the small side, I have never waited longer than 15 minutes to get seated; One such time I had a party of 5. The fish has always been smooth and delicious and their prix fixe menu makes it easy for those who have trouble deciding what to get or are unfamiliar with sushi dishes. Great interior and very helpful staff to help with any questions on the menu. This is a great place to bring friends or family from out of town and show them L.A.

Let me start off my saying that Sugarfish is my FAVORITE restaurant in La. I have been to the Santa Monica and downtown locations frequently and they are five + stars!! So I was extremely disappointed to come to this location for the first time and have a terrible service experience. The manager (or maybe head hostess) up front was the rudest I've encountered at any restaurant. I will be returning to the other sugar fish locations as the food and service are amazing. I will not be returning to the west Hollywood one though. I felt embarrassed and insulted in front of my guest.

Yum! This is a bit on the pricey side (if you're like me and usually frequent sushi places where a roll costs you a little under $3), but it is delicious. I came here with 3 amigos on a Sunday evening and there was still a wait. Luckily they live close by so they put in their name and then when we received the call that our table would be ready soon we dashed over. The four of us opted for the "trust me" menu, which is a pre fixe menu for $30, and it did not disappoint. The sushi was delicious! Buttery, and drool-inducing: perfect. Something I experienced here that I haven't elsewhere is that the rice was served warm, but the fish upon it was still cold. Luckily my friends warned me prior otherwise the sensation would've been jarring. Gratuity is already included in the bill and this is what would probably be called an "intimate" restaurant (it's pretty small inside), also parking can be a pain, but if you're willing to walk you can find a spot. I'll be back!

  • Stacey W.

We ordered "Trust Me" and it was DEEE-LISH! I substituted the blue crab hand roll for a second Toro hand roll. Very yummy, but after reading all the reviews (after eating there) I wish we would have tried the blue crab hand roll. Guess who's going back to do that?!!

  • Caroline K.

A must stop for sushi lovers. It's a bit pricey, but the quality can't be beat. The sushi is so fresh - it melts in my mouth. I shared the Nozawa box with my mom, and I was plenty satisfied with the amount. The service was excellent, and I loved how they explained what was on the plate as the rolls came out (otherwise I would be clueless as to what I am eating). I came with a party of 10 (including 5 children), and they were accommodating to our group. The menu is not really kid-friendly since they only sell raw sushi. But the kids liked the crab roll. I would love to see some tamago or eel on the menu for the children.

I heard nothing less than amazing things about Sugarfish, so during my California trip I made sure I had time to give this place a try. My sister and I decided to come during lunchtime to beat the dinner rush. It was such a great idea because we were seated immediately (it didn't last long though). Once we were seated, our waitress greeted us and went over the menu. My sister and I decided to go with the "trust me" option. If you haven't been here before, the "trust me" option is a preset menu by the chef. Organic Edamame: the beans were cooked good and nicely seasoned, but it was nothing too special. Tuna Sashimi: the tuna was fresh and had a great flavor, but it kind of got too salty for me after a couple of bites. Albacore Sushi (2 pc), Salmon Sushi (2 pc), Yellowtail Sushi (1 pc), Halibut Sushi (1 pc): all the nigri were fresh and didn't have any fishy taste to it. The ratio between fish and rice were also spot on. Toro Hand Roll: at first glance, it just looked like a pile of mush wrapped up in seaweed. But after my first bite, I couldn't stop eating it. The seaweed was a great offset to the mush by giving the hand roll a good crunch. Blue Crab Hand Roll: I didn't expect anything amazing, but this hand roll was surprisingly delicious. The crab was moist and full of flavor. The service here was also spectacular. The food came out in a timely manner and our waitress was very attentive. I also liked that we weren't rushed and given the time to enjoy our experience. If you don't opt for the "trust me" option, then I highly recommend you to give their fish a try. You will get nothing less than finest quality.

Sugarfish is consistently great sushi and very fresh no matter what location you go to. I always get the Nozawa Trust Me. It is the perfect amount of Sushi where you don't feel completely stuffed afterwards but you walk away feeling very satisfied. This has to be one of the best places for the freshest Sushi. The location is quite small and intimate inside and there is no reservations so plan on waiting a bit for a table. However it is worth the wait. If you show up slightly prior to peak times, the you don't have to wait that long. There are not a lot of bars within walking distance so you will most likely have to wait at the restaurant. However there is a small bar where you can get some beer and wine at the restaurant. Here is how the order went. Nozawa Trust Me: It starts with Organic Edamame then as you work your way through that the Tuna Sashimi shows up. The Tuna Sashimi is delicious. The sauce it comes with has great flavor. Once you finish up, then six pieces of sushi comes out - Salmon Sushi (2-pc), Albacore Sushi (2-pc), Halibut Sushi (2-pc), and Yellowtail Sushi (2-pc). Then four more pieces comes out - "Daily Special" (that day it was scallops) (2-pc) adn Snapper Susui (2-pc). Followed up by the Toro Hand Roll and the Blue Crab Hand Roll

I dined here during DineLA and it was wonderful! We came in for lunch, one tip: get here before they open! 2nd tip: make sure your entire party is there or else they can't seat you. It came with organic edamame (super salty on the outside but you don't eat the shell), albacore (yummm), salmon, yellowtail, scallop (the best part of the meal), AND toro hand roll (all you could is the seaweed). It was delicious, if I'm ever in LA for DineLA, I would definitely come back!

Rocked up at 845p on a Saturday night with AHdCA2 and was promptly told that it would be an hour wait - so, set expectations accordingly - as the night was no longer young according to the rumblings in my tum, we opted for bringing take-out back to my casa so we didn't get to choose from the full menu, which initially disappointed me - however, it. was. all. delish - and a quick perusal of the dine-in options only revealed additional sashimi options/oysters and a few more sushi choices - nothing earth shattering, though I do love a good snapper sush in my tum. We both went for the to-go "trust me" - edamame, tuna sashimi, 2 pieces each of albacore, salmon, yellowtail, and shrimp sushi, and 2 cut rolls - toro and blue crab (4 pieces each) - while usually this wouldn't be the tip of what fills me up, miraculously I found myself delightfully sated - the rice was perfectly seasoned and proportioned to the ample (yet not overwhelming) fish that was its dancing partner. For $30/pp - fantastic. If you're a more delicate eater on the run, slip into the to-go "lite", which is 1 piece of all aforementioned sushi and the same rolls. There's also a nozawa to-go, which has the bonus of having halibut and scallop sushis along for the ride. You can also order a few a la carte rolls/sush as well - though if you're expecting your krab/mayo/eel/tempura sunrise surprise, you'll be sorely disappointed as the rolls skew beautifully sparse - cuc, salmon, scallop, toro, yellowtail, lobster. Not in one roll. Individually. As it should be. Though admittedly, you'll have to pry my salmon/avo rolls from my cold dead hands b/c obs I will perish whilst dining. It's inevitable. The various bento-esque boxes (prepped fresh, obs) range from $17-250, with the latter price tag paired with a platter that includes 60 pieces of sushi and 10 cut rolls, allegedly serving 8-10 (or like 3 of me). A la carte rolls run $7.75-12.50 (8 pieces per roll). Would have loved to dine in so I could be snarky abt the other guests (slim, attractive, hip blondes, boys with fancy watches but a casual street vibe from what I crept on whilst waiting for our take-out. Place is small, dim, and a bit loud, so if you're having date night with your grandmother, perhaps hit closer to the 4:45p slot rather than 4 hours henceforth. Overall, worth a nosh many times over.

I've heard a lot about Sugarfish and finally went to try it out with my fiancé on our day trip to LA for our anniversary. Very simple sushi, but VERY delicious. I rarely get to eat sushi like this since I'm living in Texas right now and only opt for rolls when I'm in San Antonio. We went for lunch and both ordered the Nozawa which came with about 8 small sushi dishes that came out separately. I thought $35 a person was very reasonable for the variety, freshness, and quality of the fish. I couldn't point out a favorite, but everything was just delicious because the fish was so fresh. It melted in my mouth and I enjoyed everything that came out. We also appreciated the sushi rice here. They make it fresh and it's just a hint of warm and well seasoned. We didn't make a reservation, but we came early around opening time. We didn't have to wait and got a seat right away. The ambiance is really modern, but the restaurant is small. It's not a really intimate dining experience. You will probably be sitting close to another table. The restaurant was pretty packed the majority of the time we were there, but I guess that means they serve some good stuff here. The service was above average. Our server was informative and attentive. Overall, I definitely recommend Sugarfish if you are craving simple no frills sushi in LA. I'll definitely be back.

The fish is precut and the concept is prefab and yet I keep coming back, because it is consistent and it is consistently GOOD. You can't get better sushi for the price. It's not Q or Zo, but wonderful in its own right... Large Scallop and Uni always excellent here btw.

Thank the fish gods that real sushi has come to Hollywood! Walked to this place with my girl earlier this evening. We were both excited, as the only other sushi restaurant this close is Crazy Rockin' Sushi, and after scanning Sugar Fish's website, the decision was a 'no brainier'. We arrived around 7:15pm and waited about 15 minutes for seats at the bar. Not bad, as it hasn't been open that long and it's restaurant week. If you are not familiar with Omikase, give it a quick google and opt for the'Trust Me' on the menu; you will not be disappointed. Three options ranging from $25-$40 yielding the best sashimi, nigiri and sushi I have ever had. Toro hand rolls, fresh scallops, melt in your mouth halibut...shit I want to go back even though I'm full. I'll be back here weekly, and every friend from out of town will definitely be treated to this delight.

I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend. We both agree... Hands down the best, fresh sushi ever. Really, really good. BUT. This place needs new management ASAP. Horrible service, completely disorganized. Starting off with the fact they don't take reservations, but cannot properly handle the volume of people coming in in a timely, efficient manner is a really big sign that you don't know how to run your business. We waited over an hour to get a seat. Ok fine. They wanted to seat us at the bar. Don't ever sit there. All you get is this horrible fluorescent light pounding down on you from the kitchen. Who the f wants that when you're on a date? Plus all you hear is kitchen noise. Oh and the noise... Who the hell chooses 90s grunge rock for a small sushi bar? Don't get me wrong. I love the 90s. But it was blasting! Completely ruined any kind of conversation that could have happened. All we could do was eat in silence and nod our heads to the beat. Our server kept brining things out and slamming them down on the table. Giving my boyfriend whatever it was that I ordered and I got his orders. The girl took away and dumped our edamame before we were done eating it. Come on!! The people at the table next to us had the same problems. We were so close, I felt like I was on a date with them too. They had food taken away from them before they were finished too. This is a restaurant that is relying on the namesake of its famous creator. and now, the restaurant management has taken advantage of said namesake and getting away with shameful service. The sushi is excellent. But I won't be back anytime soon to endure that shit again to get a few bites of sushi.

Unbelievably good. The waiters are very nice and helpful if it is your first time. The quality of the fish is outstanding and very savory. Lunch menu is great as well! Definitely go!

I always love Sugarfish, it's good sushi for a good price, plus I love that it's around the corner from me but I just got turned away from buying dinner because I had a to-go container with a slice of cake from nearby Sycamore Kitchen (which is the on the same block). They could have offered to refrigerate it for me but didn't. Talk about no sense of community spirit. Bummer. Guess they don't mind turning away paying customers.

Very excited to have a Sugarfish within blocks of my apt. It's going to be the fix to all of my lazy days and when I can't motivate myself to cook. This is on the Nozawa Trust Me: Quality - just as fantastic as the rest of the spots. Service - today was the grand opening. I was disappointed by how rushed they made us feel. It was 5:30 and we were only the 3rd or 4th table filled (it was just myself and my partner). Each dish came out too fast. At the other Sugarfish venues they timed things very well. If you were relaxing and digesting the next dish came at the perfect time - not at this La Brea location today. The hand rolls - two of them - came out almost at the same while we still had sushi on the plate. The server kindly noted to us that we needed to way the hand rolls immediately due to the seaweed wrap before they got soft. Well we wouldn't had to rush eating them if the order had been timed better. I asked for more hot water in my tea as it was luke warm the first time and then again the second time. My boyfriend asked for Sapporo since it was on the menu - but they didn't have their liquor license yet. The server should have been more informed. He asked for a coke and received a sprite. The server said if you'd like to switch back to coke let me know - maybe get it right the first time? A bit confused because I adore all of the Sugarfish establishments. Maybe these were just first day kinks. Chef Nozawa was in house today so I am very surprised by all of this. Will definitely come back again (likely this week) :) I will update my review accordingly at that time.

This is melt-in-your-mouth-sushi. I might even go so far as to say my favorite sushi place, for its price, in LA.To make it easy for you, they've created three different set meals ( three sizes depending on how hungry you are ) with various fish, which is what I usually get anyway. This chain had just opened up on La Brea, so I'm stoked it's so close by. Friendly helpful staff.

bomb, that's it and all. the standouts included - in the sequential order from kitchen to table - albacore, yellowtail, blue crab hand roll. woooo, damn.

One word - AMAZING!! Best sushi I have ever had in LA. My only fear is that the quality eventually drops as do most sushi places here in LA. They start out amazing and then drop off once the business is built up. However, I ate here this past weekend and the sushi was the BEST I have ever had.

So good. Quality sushi, one of the best in LA. Trust him. Seriously. We just get to go though because it's soooo busy that the wait just is too much and they do a great to go menu.

Just had an amazing dinner at Sugarfush, and honestly, I am confused by the less than stellar reviews on this page! Sugarfish doesn't take reservations, but my fiancé and I arrived a little after 7:00pm, and were seated within 15-20 minutes... not bad by LA standards (although to be fair, I heard the hostess telling people that the wait was 45 minutes long around 7:30, so I guess either come before 7:00 or after 8:00 to avoid a long wait). We both decided to go with the 'Try Me' menu, which consists of edamame, tuna sashimi, 8 - 12 pieces of sushi (depending on which Try Me you go with) and two hand rolls. I have eaten a lot of sushi, and I can say that this was probably the best I've ever tried. The fish was amazingly fresh and melted in our mouths - it was so good that I had to order another toro hand roll after we had finished our first order! Our waiter Richard was friendly and attentive, bringing each new piece of sushi out a few minutes after we had finished the previous plate. Best of all? This amazing meal was very reasonably priced. Thanks for the amazing experience Sugarfish, I will definitely be back again and again!

I had a positive first time experience here. Although, we did get lost trying to find this place because for some reason the address was incorrect. Be prepared for a wait because this place gets packed and the restaurant isn't big at all. However, the food was superb! The service was really great too. Everyone ordered the Nozawa Trust Me, but I ordered the Trust Me. I was glad I ordered the Trust Me because a couple people were getting too full trying to finish the Nozawa. I think the difference was two pieces for $10 more. I'm used to seeing sashimi as longer skinnier pieces, but these were fatter and the presentation was so clean. The fish tastes so fresh and melts in your mouth. I really liked the ponzu sauce they add onto the sushi pieces. A couple people preferred it without the sauce, but I enjoyed it. The Blue Crab hand roll was really delicious too. I'll definitely go back some time.

I love this sugarfish. They are so friendly and prompt with their service. They were delayed with one of my orders and made up for it with complimentary sashimi for my friends and me. Parking is easy and even though you may have to wait, you can relax by the bar while you only have to wait a short while. Can't wait to go again!

FANTASTIC SUSHI! But I will never go back, and never recommend it. Why not? Because eating there was as detached and impersonal as a drive-thru car wash. We arrived in the early evening - but they refused to seat us because they had a "rule" against seating incomplete parties. Now, I am not unreasonable. I totally understand why they don't want one person holding down a big table for who-knows how long. But 7 out of 8 of us where there, the place was half empty, and nobody else was waiting to be seated. So that set the tone for the overall experience. The wait staff were perfectly pleasant in a Stepfordish sort of way, and served us with all the efficiency (and the warmth) of a robotic spot-welder. This was no biggie really, because we weren't there to make friends but to eat sushi. The food went a long way to salvage an otherwise tense, rushed experience - until we were informed that a "rule" prohibited us from eating the birthday cupcakes we had brought in. So, overall, all of us felt pushed out and vaguely tooled. There are way too many great sushi places in LA that make customers feel at home and appreciated to ever return to Sugarfish again.

Nozawa, you mad clinician. Your fish is fresh, but sweet? Not so much. That's ok, though, dude, because you do mostly a pretty good job with this chainlet of yours. Omakase is the way, ok, but I do wish I had not taken all your suggestions. I will still return, however, like the cat in that poem by the guy with the toro and the hair and the fare and the rarest examplar of the raw.

I ordered the trust me $40 plate for dinner and man was I satisfied. The sushi that they prepare here is so fantastic and so good that you don't need any soy sauce. The rice is warm and some of the fish dishes are ice cold. The beer is wasn't bad ether. The atmosphere is dark and intimate just way I like it. The prices on the other hand can get a little high depending on how much you order. This is definitely some place that you want to save up you're $ for it, or go here as a special occasion. But everything I ordered off the menu it was delicious and quick to be served.

I've tried several locations of Sugar Fish and so far the sushi and timing of dishes has been consistently excellent. However, until I visited this location, a few more things that I found consistent about the various Sugar Fish locations and specifically at dinner time are the noise levels, LOUD and horrible waiting lines. So far the La Brea location for a Saturday night dinner has been the shortest wait period and has slightly better acoustics if you don't want to listen in or have others listen in on your conversation. Parking can be challenging at this location, but from my place it's a quick Lyft ride.

Trust me, their Trust Me special is exquisite. The fish is fresh and come in thick slices and Sugarfish has never failed me. The system in which the food come out is perfectly timed and I appreciate that I've never waited over 5 minutes in between meals for the next dish. I think my favorite part of the sushi is that the rice is always warm and compliments the sushi. Aside from the Trust Me special, I've tried the lobster cut rolls, the yellow cut rolls, unagi (eel) sushi and spicy tuna cut rolls. They're all really delicious and they come in 4 pieces each. There is valet parking in the lot right across the street. I've only come for dinner and have had to wait a moderate amount from 20-30 minutes for parties of 3-4. I find the La Brea location to have better parking, but I've found the wait at the downtown location to be quicker ;) take your picks! The waiters are really good at refilling your drinks. I recommend the green tea. If you want to take a swig and get tipsy, the sake is awesome. The waiters and waitresses know which sake will complement your meal! I would recommend this place. Their sushi quality is so awesome!!! I'll be back. I went for two weeks in a row once because it was too good. *I dished out $40 each visit including a Trust me + sake = very stuffed and satisfied meal.

I absolutely LOVE this place! We have been going here for quite sometime. So much so we practically know everyone by name. Kyu the manager is always happy and greets us with a smile. The service is beyond. Jane always does the same and serves us as quickly as possible when we are in a bit of a rush. Thank you for making this our favorite restaurant in LA!

Best quality sushi every time. I always get the "trust me" which has the perfect amount of food. I like to substitute my blue crab hand roll for the scallop hand roll. Everything melts in your mouth! The service is great and they always time out your food so they don't stack your next course with the one that you're already on. They don't give you any sauces other than soy sauce, so I like to keep my ponzu sauce from the tuna in the beginning to save and dip my hand rolls in :) Their house sake is delicious. A bottle of that with some beer is perfect when your out with some friends

Came for the lunch spesh. We ordered the Trust Me special. That warm rice, contrasting the cold sushi was pretty damn good. Loved every single item, although I felt shy about asking for more ginger... First time trying such boug sushi. Only if I could come to afford here more often...

Oh man.. so pricy! Today was my first time trying Sugarfish, and I went with the dinela menu (which I regret, should've gone with the Trust Me!). The dinela menu came with 1 pc of: salmon, albacore, yellowtail and giant scallop. The yellowtail and albacore were delicious. I was not a fan of the scallop simply because there was too much sauce! It was almost too salty for my taste. Salmon was fine, not amazing. The salmon sashimi (in a ponzu? dressing) was delicious. The edamame was also surprisingly cold, and also salty to the last bite, which makes me wonder if the edamame is boiled in salt water... ._. Toro handroll was good, so was the cut roll! I was so sad that they didn't have toro sushi, but... oh well. Also ordered halibut sushi, which was super fresh and good, but again! the dressing was almost too much. UNI!! UNI UNI UNI oh man it was so fresh!! Second freshest I've had after Sushi Gen. I have to get uni wherever I go, and the uni really did not disappoint. I would come here again, just for the uni. bill with gratuity came out to $100 for the listed above + the Trust Me and two green teas.

Came here for dinner since my friend had been raving about this place when she was in Sea so I had to try it when I got to LA. She was right when she said the nigiri would melt in your mouth! The cut of fish were so fresh and yummy! We both ordered the trust me and both added albacore belly to it. She said the albacore belly were the money maker here. I didn't have a favorite cut because I really enjoyed all of them. I really like that they serve it on warm rice as well Overall, I really like this place and I'll probably always want to come here whenever I'm in LA.

This was a disappointment after eating at the Studio City location (which deserves a solid 4 stars). Maybe it was because we dined during off-hours, 4 PM on a Saturday. Service was prompt, but that was about the only plus. There were a bunch of little mishaps: a dirty soy sauce plate on the table when we were seated, the wrong drink orders served, and a noticeable amount of trash on the floor. The wait staff was just not on top of it. They seemed to be having a little too much fun, goofing around and flirting with each other. I've seen much more dedication and professionalism at In and Out. Sadly, and worst of all, the fish was not very fresh today. This was somewhat evident from the first plate, but we continued eating. We finally had to complain when the Yellowtail came out. There was no choice but to send that one back. It was explained to us that all fish is purchased daily, and we did receive a replacement of our choice. At that point, however, it was too late. If you're going to say, "Trust Me," you need to make sure everything about your product is awesome. I will go back to the Studio City location, but not this one.

Had my bday here which got a bit out of hand since everyone had 2-3 bottles of sake each... Needless to say we had a great time! I bring all my out of towners here for: +quality and fresh fish +the warm sushi rice +great service Not a big deal but here are some tips: -The venue is small so it's not the best to accommodate parties larger than 6. -They don't take reservations so you will have to wait but it's def worth it. -They do have a parking lot across the street but tandem when busy. Ones of the best sushi chains in LA!

  • M L.

Dining here you always know you will have fresh sushi with warmed rice. We like that touch and the seasonings. Service was great and with a smile! We usually order the Trust Me $30 or the Nozawa Trust Me $40. And as extra, the eel on the side. Its so far consistently GOOD, always. For some reason, I didn't bite the seaweed roll right and got my lips stuck on the seaweed wrap, LOL. It was like a scene from Dumb and Dumber. I was cracking up and so was my daughter who said I'd better be careful or I'll rip the skin off my lips....which I did sort of irritate trying to free my lips from the seaweed roll. My only gripe is the noise level. The acoustics are terrible! One should be able to have a little light conversation w/o the loud din of everyone else in the background, so minus one star. They don't take reservations so you usually end up waiting a bit for an available table or seats at the bar. Parking is free at the meters after 7pm.

Went here with a friend to grab a bite for dinner on a Tuesday night. The place was pretty busy so we grabbed a drink at the bar and waited about 30 minutes for a table. For our drinks, we shared a couple of bottles of the unfiltered saki which was very good. When it came to the meal, we both ordered the trust me, which included 6 or 7 courses brought out one after the other. All of the courses were very good and provided a unique dining experience. I sort of wish they would say what they were putting down as you ate it, but I had a great time nonetheless. Honestly, I was expecting it to be a little more on the pricey side, but the whole Trust me menu was only $30 per person, so not a bad price. Overall, the food here is good, the service is friendly, and the ambiance is very inviting. A perfect place for a date or a nice night out without breaking the bank.

I went today for lunch, for the first time and it was mind blowing. The quality is exceptional, you can taste the freshness of everything, the perfect warm rice. I love sushi, but this place is a good experience. I just picked up my take out from there and it was the most organized little magic box ever. Everything was in place, perfectly organized. Every sauce was label and everything looked and tasted wonderful. PS: I'm usually really picky with raw fish, but this place blow my mind.

OHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSSS. Finally got around to trying Sugarfish and YES! This is a high quality sushi restaurant. So excited I finally tried Sugarfish and it was phenomenal! FRESH FRESH FRESH FISH. Delicious, mouthwatering, and melts in your mouth like butter fresh. Seriously I wanted to savor every bite. Came into Sugarfish with a group of 6 on a Friday at noon and we were seated right away. To be seated, your entire party must be present. The crowd started rolling in at about 12:15pm and by the time we left around 2pm, the place was PACKED. There was a line out the door. I recommend getting there before the rush of lunch hour. NO reservations and a bit of a smaller restaurant with a couple spots at the sushi bar. Ordered the Trust Me and it is perfection! Beautiful presentation, the flavor and texture of the fish was absolutely divine. High quality fresh fish, warm rice *Side note: be careful when handling the rice because it's loosely packed underneath the fish Trust Me: -Organic Edamame -Tuna Sashimi -Albacore Sushi (2 pieces) -Salmon Sushi (2 pieces) -Yellowtail Sushi (1 piece) -Halibut Sushi (1 piece) -Toro Hand Roll -Blue Crab Hand Roll My top favorites were the tuna sashimi (the sauce they marinate it in is amazing and pairs so well with the fish), albacore and toro hand roll. Honestly, the entire meal was amazing! Our server was great, quick and each plate came out right after another. We didn't have to wait very long for our plates to arrive. I can't wait to come back. I could eat here EVERY. DAY.

3.5 stars. This place is great for the price. For $25 I got good quality sushi. Also, got 2 very fresh uni sushi for $9.50. I feel like it's a high end chain compared to authentic sushi restaurant, but they have their formula down. No miso soup.

Came here on a Saturday with my gf and sat by the bar. Not too crowded. Might be because we came a little after prime lunch hours. Around 1:30ish. We got seated right in front. The seats are a bit close together by the bar so if your uncomfortable with being in close proximity with people, you might want to wait for a booth. We ordered the trust me light. Perfect amount of food even when I come in with an appetite. They flow of serving each dish was pretty smooth and the staff is very friendly and attentive in clearing your plates. My go to sushi joint in this area.

Let's just say I can not wait to go back to this place!! AMAZING shush is an understatement. I couldn't get enough of their sashimi. I did the trust the chef (I think) deal, which was $30 for 7 different things. And wow did they blow my mind. Every single dish that came out was just delicious. Their fish is so fresh and so amazing that I barely used any soy sauce or anything at all. Definitely going back soon!

3 1/2 stars. I've been to other Sugarfish locations. This one is street parking. A bit on the smaller side. I like the interior design inside. A bit modern, casual, and intimate. There is a small bar and tables. When it gets busy it can get quite clustered. You have a choice between their 3 pre fix menu or their a la carte of sushi, sashimi etc. I recommend the Nozawa Trust me $40 that way you get a little bit of everything. That's what I usually get and it fills me up. It's been awhile since I've had Sugarfish and although I loved it at first after trying it again I realized it was not that great as I remembered. Especially after having so many great sushi places I guess you can say my sushi palette has become more picky. I do love that they serve warm rice for the sushi but this location put so much sauce on the rice it start to take away from the taste of the fish. The Nozawa Trust me; _Edamame. Served warm and I like that they don't add heavy salt on it. _Tuna sashimi, Their popular appetizer. Small chunks of tuna sashimi in some sweet ponzu sauce with chopped green onions on top. The tuna is fresh and the sauce is perfectly sweet and citrus like. _Albacore Sushi (2pc). At first bite the albacore was not that fresh. It had that fishy aftertaste. Was not a fan of this one. _Salmon Sushi (2pc). The salmon was fresh and I love that they add sesame seeds on top. Although I've had better salmon this was not too bad. _Snapper Sushi (2pc). The snapper was fresh and the sea salt they added on top elevated the snapper even more. The warm rice really does it for me :) _Yellowtail Sushi (2pc). The yellowtail sushi was fresh but like the salmon, I've had better. However it was still enjoyable. _Halibut Sushi (2pc). This was good. The fish seemed fresh but hard to tell with the heavy dressing of the sauce. The rice would fall apart when you pick it up. _"Daily Special" Scallop Sushi (2pc). The scallop tasted fresh but was not my fave. And there was way too much sauce on the scallop and the rice. If it's that fresh, that much sauce is not necessary. _Toro Handroll. To me the toro tasted more like tuna. It was not as fatty or buttery in texture or taste when you get a real fresh toro. But for a handroll it was good. I wish they added less rice. _Blue crab Handroll. This was good. The blue crab was fresh and tasted a tad sweet. I wish this had more crab and less rice. I would get this again! All that for $40 is not bad. The fish comes out smaller than most sushi spots. Sugarfish is known to serve their sushi in a small circle shape. I would come back again but maybe to another location. A great place to stop by if you are in the area.

Seriously the best fish in town. I do wish they had more options for rolls and what not, but the quality of the seafood is really amazing. Dinning is cool, but i mainly just go because the fish is amazing!!!

Great fish great friendly service only problem I would say is the initial smell of the place the soy sauce/fish/vinegar combination has a distinct stench but then you kinda just get used to it.

Absolutely loved my experience. We waited an hour for a table on a Friday night which isn't bad, had some of the best sushi we could have dreamed about and had friendly service from the server all the way to the hosts and manager. Got the Nozawa and never looked back. I would love to return again!

I've been wanting to come here forever, but as they don't except reservations, it's always kind of scared me off because I've heard how crowded it can get. I hate waiting for pretty much everything. ;) I came for a late lunch and sat at the bar. I opted for one of the lunch specials and it was very good! The food came quickly as I chatted with the friendly server behind the bar. They had a good wine list and I found everything to be at a very reasonable price point. Everything was fresh and very, very good. I liked how they included the tip making it easy for me to sign and be on my way.

Okay, well I came here with a friend last month and had the strangest experience at a restaurant probably ever. This is a Japanese restaurant and they don't serve rice on the side. They have rice in their sushi, obviously, but, they will not give you a side of rice. I found that extremely odd - they wouldn't give me a side of rice if I paid extra! Anyways, we get to the end of dinner and I ask for a dessert menu - you guessed it, there is none! The food was good overall, but the portions were a bit small, and definitely over priced. I'd recommend checking out Noshi sushi instead, if you're looking for sushi in the area. Yes, I think this place deserves one star because they don't serve rice or dessert.

Went here for lunch with a friend and was so impressed with their fish. Their lunch special was great!! They were a little late bringing us a course so they gave us 2 pieces of albacore on the house! Their sake was really good as well!

Went there to pick up an order. Staff was very rude and almost physically tried to ask me go outside. Absolutely disrespectful behavior, I'm never coming back. Don't go there, it's too crowded and staff is just a bunch of jokes.

I can't decide between 3 or 4 stars... but I'll go with my gut and stick with 3. There are definitely factors that wow'd me, but my overall experience was 3 stars. My friends and I were seated pretty quickly on a Saturday night, which was great! We waited maybe 15 minutes? Anyhoo, the restaurant is super dark and "romantic" haha. This would be a great date spot, especially because you get a lot of food for not thaaat much money. Almost everyone in our table ordered the Nozawa Trust Me for $40, which comes with edamame, tuna sashimi starter, 6 sets of nigiri (2pc), and 2 hand rolls. I honestly could've gone with the regular Trust Me, which is the same but minus 2 sets of nigiri. Pros: - warm rice, as everyone else raves about. It is soft, warm, and perfectly complements the cold pieces of fish. - FRESH fish. You could tell with every piece that you are getting top quality here. Soft, melt in your mouth, tender. It just made the $40 price tag even better. - the salmon nigiri was my fave by far, and it rekindled my love for fresh salmon - blue crab hand roll - I can see why everyone raves about this. Again, the perfect harmony of warm rice and colder fish (which was also so creamy) was just heaven :) Cons: - many of the nigiri came with a yuzu ponzu sauce on it that I found overpowering. My taste buds danced a little too hard, and I wished I could just focus on the freshness of the fish. Overall, a very nice experience, and although there was technically only 1 con for me, it was a big one. Take away the ponzu sauce, and I would bump this up to 4 stars for sure. FYI #1: Your entire party must be present before they seat you. A table next to us had some issues with a 3rd person joining (this supposedly shouldn't have happened at all) and they didn't let him order any food. FYI #2: They BLAST the a/c in here. Even though it was a super hot day in LA, we were all shivering a little bit by halfway through the meal. Bring a light jacket or cardigan for dinner!

I've been here a 5+ times within the last few months, and each time has been a full 5 star experience. I'm a sushi enthusiast, and nothing makes me happier than some good quality sushi which is surprisingly hard to come by! I came to Sugarfish last night for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Actually, I'm craving it again at this very moment. FOOD - The fish quality here is top notch. I typically get the Trust Me pre-fix, and it's amazing. My favorites are the tuna sashimi, the albacore, and the crab hand roll. The fish just melts in your mouth, and I love that they use 100% fresh blue crab in their hand rolls. Trust me (no pun intended), everything here is good--even the edamame tastes better here. I've also gotten the Trust Me to-go once, and it came in the cutest boxed presentation. However, I prefer to dine-in because you only have the cut roll option for take-out. LOCATION/SET UP - This location is usually crowded, which is why I like coming in around 9pm when it's less busy. There is tons of street parking, but also a $5 lot for those days when the parking gods are not with you. The interior is clean, and there is a nice calm ambience. The servers are always friendly, and bring each dish promptly. Just all around, Sugarfish provides a quality experience. This place is on the pricier side for sushi, but it is so worth it. I can't even begin to explain how much I love this place. I highly recommend it to all sushi lovers like myself :)

Oh wow, I LOVE this place. It is actually a really great deal for the "trust me" meals. It just adds up once you add in drinks and the service charge (no tipping). But I felt like it was worth every penny. The fish is fresh and delicious, the rice is perfectly warm and the sake was a perfect paring. My boyfriend and I arrived around 7:30-8ish on a Thursday evening and there was a 45 min wait (no reservations). We were lucky to grab open seats inside near the bar and get a drink while we waited for a table - it was actually a shorter wait that expected so we took our beers with us to our table when we were seated. We both ordered the Nozawa Trust Me ($40/per person) but there were other cheaper options as well and you could add on if you wanted more food. We were both hungry but the meal was perfectly filling. My favorite piece was the salmon, the sesame seeds on top are the perfect addition. The service is great and they do a wonderful job timing the courses to come out shortly after you've finished the one before. We never felt rushed and both left already planning our next trip back. Parking was easy to find on the street in the neighborhoods nearby, I think there is also valet close to the restaurant.

Came here for dinner with a few of my girlfriends. We arrived on a Thursday a little past 6 and we were seated fairly quickly. The restaurant itself is small but I enjoy the cozy intimate feel. I would not recommend coming here with a large party though. Sushi was delicious. Fresh melt in my mouth fish! The rice was amazing as well. All three of us ordered the 40$ prefix meal and we were stuffed! Tax and gratuity was included in the bill so it came out to be a little over 50$ each. It was a tasty and different sushi experience that I really enjoyed. :0) Only complaint: valet was horrible. If management is reading this please do something about your valet. Valet is 5$ (which I don't mind). As I walked to the gentlemen he was either on his phone or talking out loud about female body parts (WTF) When I handed my ticket to the gentlemen, he handed my keys and told me blatantly that he did not know where it was parked (WTF) So my girlfriend and I looked for my car! And when I found my car 1. My seat and all my mirrors were tampered with 2. He left the light on in my car! (WTF x2) Great dinner but the valet.... Bad way to end my night.

This place blew me away. I realized RIGHT away that I was at a legit traditional sushi spot when I asked for hot sauce they told me sushi isn't normally eaten with hot sauce... I said oh okay perfect I won't ask for anything else. You eat the sushi as it comes and honestly it doesn't need anything! It's simple and to the point and you wouldn't imagine the different flavors it has! We both got the 40$ meal they just keep bringing you different sushi. We also had sake and beer which makes the good that much more delicious. I highly recommend it. It's an experience, I just don't know if I could ever enjoy "spider rolls" again after this sushi! The service was great, no complains. The place is small so expect to wait a little, but no worries get some drinks at the bar while you wait.

I could seriously eat sushi everyday! New Sugarfish location on La Brea + Beverly! Small restaurant - therefore a long wait. Ordered a "Trust Me" ($30) - which included organic edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi (2pc), salmon sushi (2pc), yellowtail sushi (2pc), halibut sushi (2pc), toro hand roll and blue crab hand roll. I left feeling full, happy, and satisfied. All the sashimi was extremely tender and a few of the pieces come already sauced. Loved the tangy sauces on the halibut and albacore. Definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in Los Angeles and with a fair price!

You've probably heard enough about Sugarfish to bring you to this Yelp page. My recommendation is to pay for the most expensive "Trust Me" and just live with it. The food presented to me was of very high quality- if not the best quality fish I've ever had the opportunity to eat. There is a very pleasant richness, freshness, buttery goodness to their fish. The tuna sashimi was so savory and the texture was perfectly firm and cool. Their yellow tail was lovely, fresh and clean, I could eat it all day. I absolutely died when I ate their large bay scallop - the texture was buttery and divine. I was the blue crab hand roll was significantly bigger or something. Or I wish they gave me 2. It tasted like it came right from the ocean. I can't remember if I was in love with their fatty tuna, but I like to pretend in my mind that it was probably very good. My biggest complaint, other than the enormous bill I received, was that they put WAY TOO MUCH PONZU sauce on EVERYTHING. Well, on like 3/10 dishes was drenched in the sauce. And it's disgusting. The texture and the fish essence was like tainted by the overuse of that disgusting sauce. Would I come back? Sure. Sure, man, I'll come back and eat here again. Was it, in terms of quality, the best fish I've ever had? Sure, most likely. But does this place have me sprung? No way, dude. Nice try, Sugarfish. You are an elegant and beautiful being, but like a siren's song, I'm not falling for your tricks.

***Sugarfish by Sushi Nozawa is a consistent and reliable chain of sushi restaurants that delivers fresh, moist and soft sushi using the most popular and mainstream nigiri pieces; while this Sugarfish had the same quality as the other locations, I put it a slight notch below some of the best Sugarfish locations I have been to based on the cutting of the fish and the packing of the sushi rice here*** There are Sugarfish locations in almost every part of Los Angeles and it is easy to see why. Sushi is popular in this part of California and Sugarfish consistently delivers on the most important part of sushi, which is fresh, soft and moist fish. And while sushi spots tend to be expensive due to a la carte pricing, Sugarfish features three sushi combinations that are reasonably priced (at least compared to traditional a la carte sushi pricing). At lunch, Sugarfish features three sushi combinations: Trust Me Lite, Trust Me and Nozawa Trust Me; dinner features the same three combinations, but the combinations are a little pricier though you do get more fish. Regardless of which sushi combination you select, Sugarfish features the most popular fish and mainstream choices so even if you are wary of sushi, you are likely to find the experience and food pleasant. I tend to go for the Nozawa Trust Me because I find the other two combinations to be a little small (especially at lunch). The Nozawa Trust Me features organic edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi (2 pieces), salmon sushi (2 pieces), yellowtail sushi (2 pieces), halibut sushi (2 pieces), a toro hand roll, a blue crab hand roll, and the Nozawa daily sushi (2 pieces or a sashimi course). The sushi in the Nozawa Trust Me was good to excellent. I thought both the salmon and yellowtail were really good--very fresh, soft and moist with nice clean flavors. The albacore was also good and nicely dressed in a ponzu-like sauce, but I have had slightly more moist and melt-in-your-mouth albacore at other Sugarfish locations. The halibut was okay. It was not as soft and nicely cut as the halibut sushi I have had at other Sugarfish restaurants. The sushi rice was slightly warm, moist and seasoned well--a good amount of vinegar to keep the rice moist and tasty but not overpowering and acidic like you sometimes get at Sugarfish properties. Unfortunately, the rice was not packed that well. The sushi fell apart a little bit when I picked up the nigiri with my chopsticks. The organic edamame featured great soy beans though they were a tad salty. The tuna sashimi was very nicely dressed--great salty and sour notes but not overly acidic or vinegary. The Nozawa daily special of halibut sashimi was not simply a sashimi version of their halibut sushi. The halibut sashimi was topped with a good ponzu-like sauce and finely minced serrano pepper to give it a heat that you typically do not get with Sugarfish choices. I did not like the cutting of the halibut though. It had a lot of tough and chewy parts like snapper. Both hand rolls delivered warm rice and soft fillings (minced toro in one and creamy blue crab in the other hand roll) contrasted against crispy as well as both salty and slightly sweet nori. The blue crab mixture was good, but while the similar blue crab hand roll at Kiriko does not deliver the fresh and crispy nori of Sugarfish, I think Kiriko's version delivers higher quality crab (and more of it). Service was very good. The food came out at a quick and even pace and the staff was very personable, professional, polished, and attentive. This Sugarfish is quite small. There is a small sushi counter and several tables in either booth or half booth form. Like most Sugarfish properties, this Sugarfish features a very modern and minimalist look that is complemented by a lot of beautiful, classic and natural looking wood to reflect the simple, pure and close-to-nature feel of Japanese cuisine. I also thought the light fixtures were great choices. There were Edison bulbs to kind of align with the industrial feel throughout this part of Los Angeles, but the bulbs were also wrapped in modern domes to keep the look from becoming too hipster. As mentioned, prices are fairly reasonable as long as you order one of their sushi combinations. If you are a fan of Sugarfish, you are very likely to enjoy this property because it is very similar to the other locations in terms of modern atmosphere, quality of raw fish and service. While everything was nicely seasoned, some of the cutting of the fish and the packing of the rice was a noticeable notch below other Sugarfish properties. In addition, while I enjoyed the serrano pepper featured in their halibut sashimi, I found the daily Nozawa specials at other locations like the scallop sushi in Beverly Hills and the broiled eel in Downtown Los Angeles more satisfying. Still, this Sugarfish is probably a consistently good sushi sport. Metered street parking is available.

Rude and overpriced . There are much better options in town. Try Sushi Eyaki down the street. I really wanted to like these guys but they wouldn't sit me or let me order for the rest of my party. I am usually easy to please but this place is simply not worth your time. The quality is lacking in the fish itself and I was not happy at all with my experience .

Stop reading more reviews of people complaining about the parking or price. Just go. If $40 for a set menu of sushi that will blow your mind is pricey to you then skip 2 or 3 crappy lunches during the week and reward yourself by trying Sugarfish. They also have a la carte but I always recommend the Nozawa Trust Me. The restaurant itself has no parking or valet so whether you choose to park in the lot across the street or a meter you will have to pay. I mean this is the "hip" LA (Joe Jonas was having diner here last time I was there LA) Expect a wait. Don't come here starving. Give them your name and number and go have a beer up the street. Come back and have fresh, flavorful, mouth melting sushi. The tip is included in your bill. If you're craving a dynamite roll or a Philadelphia roll this is not the place for that.

I'm surprised that SugarFish has become a chain-type restaurant! But I guess I'm glad that there are multiple locations across LA now. There is only street parking so be prepared. We parked in the neighborhood one street over. The location is not too big and set on the corner of the street. Everything is super clean and minimalist and Japanese-feeling but modern at the same time. I loved the details in the decor, including the sliding wooden doors for the bathrooms. We ordered the 'Trust Me' set. The fish here is sooo soft and fresh and delicious! It is absolutely on par with the top notch sushi restaurants in Japan. The only complaint I have is that the rice to fish ratio is not very favorable. There was way too much rice per sushi piece in my opinion. Although the price point may seem steep initially, the food quality definitely makes it worth it. I've eaten much more expensive sushi in Japan and I can say that the quality of fish at SugarFish can definitely compare to that of Japan's.

Sugarfish provides consistently top notch sushi at a real decent price! I know there are other places that sell super higher end sushi and all that for a fortune, but honestly the taste palette just agrees with sugarfish so well. Price is so good, impo, considering the quality.

I LOVE this sugarFISH! So much. Soooo so much. First, parking is much better here (if you get here before the dinner rush, there's plenty of street parking because the restriction ends at 6pm!). Second, it's not as loud or crazy as the other sugarFISh in downtown LA. I also really like the Trust Me, because it's consistently good. It's a little pricey ($30), but it is worth every penny. The sushi quality is amazing, the rice is soft and warm, and the sauces are on point. The service here is also really attentive, so my water glass was never empty (thank goodness!). Get here before 7pm on a weekday! Their take-out is also presented well. :)

  • Stella A.

Obsessed with this place, the fish is always fresh and super yummy. I love the crunchy nori the crab and toro hand-rolls are wrapped in, they just don't do hand-rolls for take out because the nori gets soggy. My only complaints are the long wait, always, and they never have uni! So sad! The Trust Me is always the perfect amount of food. I get the Trust Me average 3x a week. Thanks for coming closer to Hollywood!

4 stars for food, I took last star off for convinience , really small place. Sushi is great my wife loves it, and she is picky. Very small space for such a good sushi.

  • Z L.

I had the Trust Me order for lunch. It was quite ok but overpriced for the amount of fish. I also didn't like the warm rice that falls apart and the ponzu sauce in the tuna sashimi. To me, the best in the Trust Me order are the Toro and Blue Crab handrolls. Overall, it was decent, but I had high expectations coming in and the fish didn't wow me to the extent that I hoped.

Come for lunch and get some quality sushi at a fair price. The wait is totally worth it. Trust me, you won't regret it! My coworkers and I really enjoyed the food and environment. We will definitely come back.

Trust me... This place is amazing!! Hands down a mouth watering experience every time.. I can't help but start salivating every time I drive by. Trust me set is good enough for me but I usually add a lobster cut roll its a must try! Packed on weekdays as well as weekends so be prepared to wait! Lunch isn't bad and the trust me sets are a bit cheaper. Love love love!

Very very bad customer service. They called our name and asked us to seat on a table. When we got ready to order , they said" sorry we meant to call some one else." They have good food but their customer service is very bad and not organized.

From the moment they won't seat you because your entire party isn't standing together to the time that they won't let a friend who happens to be in the area stop by for a drink, you know that the fine staff at Sugarfish is prepared to take you on a phenomenally pretentious culinary journey, the likes of which are practically unprecedented in any other city than Los Angeles. If you'd like to break the norm by ordering ala carte your waitress will ensure that your food is brought out at the inverse time of your dining companions and that their plates are placed in front of you. This, dear friend is what you're paying for in the 16% included gratuity. Why even allow someone to tip well if the tip can't possibly be deserved? The geniuses at Sugarfish have truly figured it out! I've dined in countries where tipping is frowned upon quite frequently, and since the United States doesn't happen to be one of them I just assume this is another way that the owners can strive for true authenticity. The rice was of a high quality and the sushi was well assembled. Food quality was good and the rolls were fairly priced, although selection was low. The shame is that this concept could be quite a bit of fun if they could simply take a deep breath and relax. The food truly is excellent and if served in a friendly environment it'd be a winning proposition.

Quality is always pretty good here. I usually get the "Trust Me" special which comes in $20, $30, or $40 increments. The difference being extra items being added per tier. I usually go with the $30 which seems like the best bang for the buck. Mine came with a Tuna sashimi starter, Salmon and Albacore, Halibut & Yellow Tail, a Toro Handroll, & a Blue Cram Handroll. Not bad for $30. Tax & Tip included comes out to around $37.xx. This location is pretty cozy, they have bar seating and a few tables. Bathroom has sliding doors. Parking is on the street or in a lot across the street.

This place was great! Came here with someone who used to work here so the staff was really nice. They are very precise here with their servings and timing so that they are consistent. Like the starbucks of sushi. Quite modern surroundings:). Fish is consistently fresh. Loved the ponzu sauce that came with their tuna sashimi. Got the Nozawa Trust Me, which was pretty filling for $40! My favorite was the scallop sushi and the yellowtail. we got here at 530pm on a sunday so there was no line but by the time we left, there was a line.

I LOVE THIS PLACE. Hands down the best sushi in town! It's so good that I go at least 4-5 times a month and each time has been a 5 star experience. The food is clean, fresh and delicious! The quality of fish is great and it just melts in your mouth (drooling as I type this). If you're a first timer at Sugarfish, I recommend getting the Trust Me. Trust Me is the only thing I order at Sugarfish and sometimes, extra blue crab or toro hand rolls. The location is okay, but usually crowded. The restaurant is not big or too small, it's medium sized for a place that's really busy. You won't get seated until all of your party is there and depending on what time you go. Weekdays and weekends around 8:30-9:00 p.m. is really busy.. but it's totally worth the wait! The restaurant is clean and they really do a great job keeping it in top notch shape. The parking is $2 with validation from the lot across Sugarfish, BUT there is street parking available (residential & meter) and the meter goes dead after 6 p.m., so you might want to try that. The price is a bit pricey (in my opinion) for the amount of sushi you get. The Trust Me ranges from $35-$40 depending on the tax and tip, but I think it's worth every penny. For sushi lovers like me, you NEED to give Sugarfish a try! You'll never regret it.

Had been to their Brentwood location, but got take out delivery thru the SM location for the first time. It was very good, pretty, and so detailed. I would def go eat there and order again. The sushi is fresh, the rice is sweet, and they give you little containers of sauce and all the trimmings so you don't miss out on the full dining experience. I need to go to the actual location at some point.

I love sushi, and I really really truly believe this is the best, freshest, tastiest sushi I've ever had. I had the Trust Me and shared an order of Uni with my friend. The Trust Me was just one good plate after the other. Every single bite was scrumptious. The fish was so fresh and tasty. The rice was warm and that just made everything better. Even the soy sauce seemed better than average. Just get it and you won't regret it. This was the first time I've tried Uni however. It was interesting... everyone had rave reviews and even the table next to us was excited that we were eating it. They described it to us as "fishy ice cream" which to me doesn't sound appealing. My best analogy is that it's as if I walked into the ocean, stepped on something squishy, scraped it off my foot and put it in my mouth. Needless to say, not my favorite. BUT this doesn't take away from my affinity towards Sugarfish in general! The Trust Me plate was still amazing and I will definitely come back for more.

This is by far the best sushi restaurants in Los Angeles. It was my first time going there today. I tried out the 40 dollar deal. It was amazing. The quality of the fish was really fresh. It's been a tough time to find a good sushi restaurant here. Thank God I finally got to try this place out. The waitress and the rest of the staff did an outstanding job today.

I've been to every location but this one is always perfect every time!! Loved the dine la menu too! The salmon sashimi was amazing and the lobster hand roll was delicious!! I crave sugar fish once a week and wish I could eat it every day!! Best sushi in LA for sure!

Yes, it really is as good as everyone says it is, and I've had a heck of a lot of sushi (and I'm super critical of it). Parked in the lot across the street as suggested on their website, you just get it validated at the restaurant. Friendly service, only had to wait about 10 minutes for a single seat for lunch on a weekday. Servers are welcoming, helpful and explain the menu to you if you're a newcomer. I tried the Trust Me Light (pre-set courses, perfect for newbies who want to sample a variety), as I wasn't sure how filling it would be. I would recommend going one step up from this in size if you're after a standard lunch, as I ended up ordering extra. Also had a hot green tea which was excellent. Onto the sushi - the rice is warm and so soft, the fish melts in your mouth (the most cliche but accurate phrase I could use to describe it). It's never tough or chewy and has zero of that yucky over-fishy/ocean taste some seafood can have. Just divine! The seaweed on the hand roll was deliciously salty and crunchy. Also, definitely get the toro sushi (fatty tuna) - it is expensive but so rich in flavour, soft and tasty. The Trust Me Light actually includes the toro hand roll, but I ordered the toro sushi after as well because it was so good. Just writing this review makes me crave more sushi from Sugarfish, so I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Love this sushi chain. Never get sick of their Trust Me specials. Very filling and a great value. This location is very nice. Find this bigger than the Marina Del Rey Location, although seating is always pretty tight at every single location. There is a wait time, so expect at least a 20 minute wait. Of course coming after lunch hours or on Weekdays are a lot less congested than weekends. They have some benches to wait outside. Inside is very loud. You will hear conversations from both sides, so it's one of those places where conversation is quite difficult. You will need to find street parking. I can usually find some in the back residential street.

Super Hollywood trendy (and yes I saw That Guy! From That Movie! at a nearby table) but the staff are not snobby. The "Trust Us" combo is excellent value for the money and the quality of the fish is amazing. I don't know what magic they put n the sushi rice but it is some of the best I have ever tasted. Winner winner sushi dinner!

ok so here is the deal on Sugarfish. Its almost impossible to eat here on the weekends at night. The biggest tip is GO AT LUNCH! AVOID THE ONE-TWO HOUR WAITS. the food - INCREDIBLE Pricing - AMAZING love the warm rice.

So they don't take reservations. Our wait time about 30 mins. There's a bench outside of the restaurant as we enjoyed a beautiful LA spring weather. And as far as parking, there is private lot across the ways. I believe it's $3. Ok. On to dinner. I remember my handsome companion ordering us groth chardonnay for starters. This is always a perfect way to start a good evening IMO because its guaranteed to have a perfect ending:) Anyway, we went with what was recommended by our server ..Nozawa Trust Me and Trust Me/Lite. Pretty similar as far as which nigiri they pick for you. Only difference is the Nozawa Trust Me comes with 2pc vs the Lite's 1pc. Our server brought each item to our table, one by one. Perfectly executed. Beautifully synchronized. I love that! -Organic edadame. Warm and salted just right. -Tuna sashimi sitting on a sweet Ponzu sauce with scallions. Honestly damn good. Definitely melt in your mouth, buttery and fresh all over. Good start! -Nigiri : albacore, sake, hamachi, snapper, halibut, ebi. Hhmmm......warm rice (5star - this is the kind of nigiri I am use to and was initially introduced to by my ex - father-in-law who was a sushi chef in Tokyo). Sushi rice could've been flavored with more vinegar but definitely cooked perfectly. All the fish was definitely fresh. Not fishy. Not smelly. - Toro handroll. I had to open mine up. I needed to see the color and taste it by itself, without the gohan. And it was simply amazing . It's been a long @$$ time since I have raved about a sushi place. Great service. Cozy atmosphere. Delicious flavors. Amazing company. We are already planning on our next visit here :)

Wow. Just finished dinner at this place and was blown away. I had the Nozawa prefixed menu and I must say, I have never eaten such fresh sushi before! Each bite literally melted in my mouth. I felt like I was in Japan eating their sashimi. I'm already looking forward to the next time I come back here for my sushi fix. Which is hopefully tomorrow..

To end the "Trust Me" on the BLUE CRAB ROLL is such a bummer. You have such an amazing meal lead up to and leave off on something that my boyfriend and I had to spit out, and it almost turns the whole AMAZING meal into just remembering how bad the crab was. The crab tasted rotten, and very very fishy. I was bummed and even thought my cat wouldn't eat that. I will not order the trust me again, because of how bad that was. The other fish was so delicious though, and left me craving for more! Mouth watering and melt in your mouth goodness all at once. I was expecting the tuna sushi to have some sort of specialty sauce too, but it didn't. I didn't mind that, because tuna is perfect just how it is. The Toro roll is really good, but just a little too fatty for my taste. I like just a standard tuna roll. But it wasn't awful and I wouldn't write it off. I wish I could give 5 stars because I dream of this place at night (much like Jiro dreams of sushi) but the waitress didn't even ask if everything was okay or why there were spit out chunks of blue crab roll on the plate, left for the birds...

Yes. Do it. Don't be scared by the hype or price. Just do it. The fiance and I went here for our anniversary, after drooling over the yelp pictures and menu for years. We were scared there would be a line and long wait before our Book of Mormon tickets... We arrived around 5:30, and there was no wait! Fairly empty! So a good tip is to definitely get there early if you want to avoid the long wait. When we left around 6:30, there was a wait. We of course went with their fixed menu, and it was delicious. I wish I could eat it everyday. The service was great too! Also had a glass of white wine which was perfectly paired with the fresh fish. Yum.

I'm not a big sushi fan, but I really liked this place for some reason. Maybe it's the vinegar flavoring that they put on it? The warm rice is pretty awesome too. The place itself is small and cozy. Brought my family here and we had a great time :)

I was back in LA from New York for just one night so a friend and I of course went to Sugar Fish. The Nozawa Trust Me is hands down better than any deal I've found in New York and probably in all of La too. 12 pieces of nigiri, 2 sashimi, 2 hand rolls, and edamame is so much for only $40. The fish taste like butter and when we were finished I wanted to order more even though I was stuffed. I'll be dreaming of Sugar Fish until my next visit back to LA.

FOR THE SUSHI FANS: The only downside is that after eating at this place you'll never be able to enjoy regular sushi bars!!! They are amazing. Real taste of fish. The best and the healthiest choice. And the warm rice.... If you haven't tasted it yet, go! Just remember: after that you'll have to spend your money here very often :D

I've eaten my way through a fair share of this city's sushi joints and Sugarfish is still at the top in my opinion. You can order anything on the menu and be confident that it'll be fresh and paired with perfectly seasoned rice. You can't say that about too many sushi restaurants....even in L.A. I see some reviewers giving this place a poor rating due to the fact that the rice is served warm. I can't blame them for not knowing - but this is the "Edo" style of serving sushi rice. It was developed in Tokyo, and while it may not be enjoyable for some I actually love it! One reviewer said the warm rice must be due to "poor kitchen management". Not so! This is done on purpose and enhances the flavor of the fish. Another reviewer also complained that almost everything in the omakase came with rice. Sugarfish is not like other Japanese omakase restaurants! It's sushi, rolls and sashimi. If you're looking for other side dishes and appetizers go elsewhere. I've always had solid service at every Sugarfish I've been to including this one. I hope they keep expanding so I can get my Sugarfish fix wherever I go!

Consistently good. Expect a wait. Give the hostess your phone number and have a drink down the block. Nozawa is the way to go. I usually order two for myself. If Shayne is working your table you're in good shape. He's awesome!!!

This place is a must try, Loved their sushi, fish quality is really good, we had the trust me lite & I enjoyed all the rolls, the tuna sashimi is my favorite though

I love this place! The service is excellent. They are so friendly and fast. I usually order the nozawa trust me. The sushi is absolutely delicious. Everything tastes so fresh! I love their sashimi. It is by far the best I have ever had. Their rice is warm and delicious. Today I tried the uni and it was amazing. If you love real sushi I recommend you come here. The ginger isn't that artificial pink crap. The wasabi is great too! I recommend the iced green tea to drink, delicious. I've gone here 4 times this past month and I love it!!

Overpriced but their blue crab handroll was the bomb.

When I'm craving sushi I come here. It's expensive, but you're getting quality and amazing fish. The Trust Me takes away the stress of deciding what to order and gives you a great variety. When the daily special is good (almost always), I usually get sucked into ordering the Nozawa. Sometimes the wait can be long, but hard to fault Sugar Fish on that.

You can't go wrong here. I always get the Trust Me. I was told Large scallop was the special, so I immediately chose the Nozawa Trust Me for dinner tonight, without hesitation. I love the flavors of the albacore, salmon, halibut and large scallop, plus my fave, the blue crab hand roll. The combination of the warm rice and fresh fish is to die for. And the crispy freshly toasted seaweed of the hand roll makes eating it such a delight. I never dip in soy sauce, I'm fully satisfied by the natural flavors of each fish. This has become my favorite sushi spot, as I always leave with a happy full tummy. The Uni is also very good. I have never been disappointed with my order or the service here.

Sugarfish is always a slam dunk for sushi and a good time. The fish is always consistent and the rice is super flavorful. I came to the La Brea location last Friday and we had a great time and enjoyed our dinner. The only problem is the food comes out so quickly and you aren't able to have a social meal. If that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere but the fish here is top notch! There is street parking or a private lot on the north corner. It does tend to get crowded and they don't take reservations. Takeout is also amazing here as well!

  • MsHot T.

The staff was friendly. Service was scattered - it took three requests with three different people for us to be served hot green tea. The fish was fresh. They did not have uni. Bummer. They do not serve fried amaebi head. Big disappointment. The sushi rice was **HOT**. BIG. FAT. NO-NO. All in all, not a bad sushi meal. Not deserving of all the hype, in my opinion. I would give it three stars, but the sushi rice was falling apart and hot!!

Food was fresh and very good. Prices are reasonable especially for good sushi. Service was also very good. The food at Nobu is better and more creative but also cost 4 to 5 times more.

My favorite sushi spot on this planet. There isn't much variety, that's why I dont come here when i'm absolutely starving.. but their portions are just right. Their toro hand roll is to die for. I basically have to order like ten of those cause it's so good. Their sashimi is served over warm white rice, it's crazy good. Their staff is attentive and fast also

Food excellent. New school sushi philosophy, somewhat of a gringo safe menu. Nonetheless, they don't compromise anything for flavour. I am a huge fan of how he insists to not use any soy sauce, however, being a huge advocate of wasabi, I disliked how he hardly used wasabi in any of his dishes, or even said "wasabi would be good on this", because wasabi was good on it. (I'm looking at you, crab roll). Service. Was. Utter. Shit. ESPECIALLY, because they do it like the rest of the world, and put the service charge automatically. Food came too slow, the rice was warm (which it shouldn't have been), which translates to poor kitchen management. And worst of all, poor waiting. My dad ordered 6 different kinda of sushi, he only got TWO of his orders. When we asked the waiter what was up, it turns out he completely missed four of my dad's orders. I do not care how good your food is. If you can't even get it to your customers, don't even bother.

I am seriously addicted to their hand rolls!!! It's made with warm rice, cold fish, and crunchy seaweed! You have to eat it as soon as it's served, which is traditionally how you are supposed to eat hand rolls - you sit at the sushi bar, and the chef hands you the hand roll and you eat it right away. If you wait, the seaweed will be saugy. No Bueno. Back in the day, Nozawa's little shop in studio city is known to be the "sushi nazi" for a reason, there are rules you need to follow here. 1. No take outs on the hand rolls 2. You will not be seated until everyone in your party are present. 3. You cannot ask for extra sauce 4. You need to eat your food as soon as it's served, no waiting. 5. Mandatory and automatic 16% tip is calculated into your final bill. 6. Do not dip your sushi that already have sauces on it into soy sauce. If you just follow these rules the sushi nazi and it's minions will not bother you... You can eat in peace. The fish here is excellent! Melts in your mouth! The quality is consistent through out all the Nozawas, so you know you will get quality stuff when you go to one of them. Only bad thing I have to say is that they lack variety... But that's what this place is known for - quality cold fish on warm rice. You don't come here for seaweed salad.

Would like to give it 5 stars for the sushi alone. But the service... My god. I live a half a block from the restaurant, I have been maybe 20+ times since they opened. With friends, alone, at a table, the bar. Mostly eat solo at bar after work because it is simply delicious sushi. Yes, fresh, mouth watering good. *The quality fish and taste of the sushi is the ONLY thing that keeps me coming back.* I want to like it more! Just with the vibe of the employees it is impossible. You know when you think, "hey, I come here so often, surely I'm a regular by now..." Then the girl at the bar says (in her usual flat tone) "have you dined with us before?" I had to keep myself from laughing. Um.. Yes I have. We spoke two days ago when I ate at the same seat and spend $50 or so on dinner and ordered the same thing. Just like the week before.. I even know her name. I have given your establishment quite a bit of business actually, Lil Miss heavy on the eyeliner. The people that work there are just constantly chattering amongst themselves, checking their phones, I've even heard them badmouthing customers who were currently dining.. Eek. Not nice. The staff (besides one somewhat friendly manager, and one friendly male server) are clearly clueless as to how to behave in a restaurant. It's quite dim of them to be so careless because you never know who you are serving. The restaurant scene in LA is intimate, I would highly suggest they re-train their staff on proper restaurant etiquette. Although acknowledging someone you interact with on a frequent basis shouldn't require training... It is called manners, common sense, courtesy. If award winning chefs, owners, and GMs of Michelin Starred restaurants know and acknowledge a good customer by first name... Maybe, just maybe the young ladies that serve sushi and Sapporo should learn to say "nice to see you." All in all, excellent food, just clueless, immature staff.

Love all their locations! Always busy though. Wait time was about 25 minutes. Had a small waiting area outside. Seating is quite tight. You're practically sitting side by side with the next table. Pretty clean and sleek interior. They have a small bar in the front if you wasn't a drink. Food is fresh and tasty! Always get the trust me special!

It took an hour to get to this location from ktown because either yelp had their address wrong or when it connected to the navi, it took us to the wrong place several times. But it was worth it! It was my first time at a Sugarfish, and it was a great experience. I came with a group of 5 others, and coincidentally our server was a friend of a friend's so we got really great, attentive service. Five of us ordered the Nozawa Trust Me, and one person got the Trust Me. The only difference was $10 extra for Snapper and a Daily Special. If you're super hungry, I would get the Nozawa Trust Me, but it's not for the faint of stomach. It's a LOT of food. I think next time, I would be good with the Trust Me. The fish was good quality, and the sushi had an interesting twist - it had a ponzu type sauce on it. I really liked the concept, but I wish they had used a bit less sauce because it took away from the flavor of the fish. The dish that was an absolute stand out was the Blue Crab hand roll. Seriously amazing!

Super disappointed. Food was good but the place lacks any ambiance whatsoever. There's nothing like a typical sushi bar where you can watch skilled artisans working their magic. Just a Denny's style cutout between the bar area and the kitchen. And I found the fact that they serve your main course in "stages" super irritating. For example, I ordered the Trust Me which consists of sone sashimi, eight pieces of sushi and two rolls. First they serve the sashimi. Then you wait. Then they served four pieces of sushi. Then you wait. Then they served four more pieces of sushi. Then you wait. Then they served the first roll. Then you wait. Then they finally served the last roll. Hallelujah!!! Dude! When I want dinner, I want ALL of my dinner - ALL at once! I'm a big boy and can decide for myself what order to eat my food in and how fast I want to eat it. I don't need some pimple - faced half child doling out my rations as hevfools around and jokes with his "colleagues". Nor do I need a snickering little woman sitting next to me NOT minding her own business when I inquire as to the reason for the style of service. My question wascdirected to the server not you sweetheart and I was there with my husband. You my dear were dining all by yourself. And to top it all off they serve no desert! (Thank goodness Milk isn't far away). But apparently that would dilute the purity and sanctity of this noisy "trendy" little hole in the wall. Oh well, we thought we'd try something new. But we'll definitely be heading back to our regular sushi place next time. I like it's traditionally welcoming Japanese style way better than this pretentious little place with no soul or character.

Been there twice now for lunch and the $35 'Nozawa Trust Me' omakase is amazing and well worth the price for the quantity and quality. You will leave very satisfied. I'm a sushi snob and this place is top notch for lunch. Haven't been here for dinner but I imagine it would be solid.

I always get the most expensive meal... is it the deluxe? I always just look for the price and pick so I can't remember. =) Anyway, I can eat and this fills me up. The fish is soooo fresh and delicate. I love every item that comes out. And if you're in a rush, they will bring it out as fast as you can eat it. I was in and out within 30 minutes one day... maybe less? I actually got back to the office with time to spare.

This place makes you realize how disgusting other sushi places are. The fish just melts in your mouth, the rice is warm and tastes unlike any other sushi rice I've ever had, and it is very very simple. This is not the place to ask for spicy mayo or a California roll. The downside- don't come here hungry. I made a mistake of ordering the trust me light because I am a light eater and was starving still at the end of my meal. Ladies, I know you think it's more chic to order a trust me light, but men like women who can eat. Just order the trust me, or trust me nozawa if you're really daring. Delicious !

Ordered the Nozawa Trust Me and it was delicious. The halibut and snapper were my favorite items from it. Shared it with my boyfriend plus sweet shrimp sushi, and it was the perfect amount of food. Just wish they had hot sake. And the servers weren't the most attentive because it was closing time. Would definitely come back, though. Quality of the fish was really good.

Got here at 5:30 and waited maybe 5 minutes to be seated. However, when we left around 6:45, there was a long wait with people outside waiting to be called. So get here early! Both myself and my friend had the Trust Me ($30 each). Tip is included in your bill and this place can get pricey. My friend which came here before and had the Lite stated she was still hungry afterwards, but the Trust Me hit the spot for both of us. Straight off, I know very little about sushi. I'm usually not too picky. However, even someone with my unrefined taste could tell that our sashimi, hand roll, etc. was extremely fresh, delicious and on a whole new level than what I am used to. It's extremely delicious. As soon as you get your rolls, eat them as the warm, sticky rice will fall apart if you wait too long. It does somewhat feel like you're eating on someone else's time because your dishes are brought out as soon as they're made, meaning they don't wait if you haven't finished the previous one. However, it was a lot of fun waiting for the next one or rushing to catch up so you could try your new plate. It's a little dim, probably my only complaint but also a great ambiance for a date (which I was unfortunately not on). Also, I LOVED their service. Our bill came without us requesting it (which is always a peeve of mine at more high end restaurants) and immediately one of the managers came over and took it away and apologized and stated it was a mistake. Neither of us had complained so this was a pleasant surprise. Will come here again, preferably when someone else is paying.

I was fortunate to attend the grand opening event and am dumbfound by the ungrateful reviewers that had anything negative to say - it was a FREE you guys. Yes, there was no alcohol offered and the waiters were all over the place, but the sushi melted in your mouth. I haven't had a better omakase anywhere for that price. La Brea is fortunate to welcome such a pristine sushi spot.

2nd chance for this ridiculous restaurant. Overpriced and you'll leave hungry... As I said about the one in Studio City... any restaurant that has to tell you to trust them -can't be trusted. There are too many better Sushi places at half the cost. Let's face it, the fish all come from the same place.

i don't get it. hearing all the hype, and seeing the sleek design of this place really gave me high hopes on the food. would it be trendy? would there be ground break/awe-inspiring dishes that tantalize a new tastebud? that would be solid NO. the menu is simple. so simple, you'd think you went to your neighborhood sushi joint. the menu offers very limited fish choices (no mackerel, no escolar). i didn't see any appetizers except edamame. the omakase lineup, like most faces of LA, is full of fillers: - what is up with the warm/hot rice?! it just ruins the fish. the rice should be a blank canvas to carry and highlight the fish's texture, temperature and taste. the hot rice just overpowered the fish. - edamame as a part of the omakase. really? what a waste. i'd except seaweed salad, cucumber salad, simple lotus root salad...but cheap steamed soybeans? how "american" - too much rice in everything!! everything on the omakase was with rice - toro roll and blue crab roll. again, with the warm rice. i couldn't even tell i was eating toro. the blue crab roll tasted like tuna salad. all that was missing was some ritz crackers. too much rice. i will not be back. unless someone who is not adventurous in sushi, i'd bring them here. actually, the sushi at whole foods has a better selection. and there's not wait! PS: we tried to order hot tea. tonight, their hot water heater was broken. isn't that a health violation not to be able to have hot water? how are you sanitizing your dishes then? PSS: there is a parking lot across the street on 1st and La Brea. it's a weird tandem parking system. expect a wait. Sunday night at 745pm, there was about a 30min wait.

Always always always read the sign before parking. Came here last Thursday night at 9pm & definitely didn't think I'd get a parking ticket that late on a week night. Damn you LA! On to the food.. The 'Trust Me' is the best bet to go. Everything was so fresh, satisfying & just the right amount. Like other reviews, it melts in your mouth! The only complaint is having the blue crab as the last roll. How can you end it on probably the least favorite? Toro roll was amazing, and should've been the last. By the way, my friends & I called in to see how long the wait would be, and they said 15 minutes. When we got there, we were told 45 minutes. Lame that they would tell us differently over the phone (I don't live more than 15 minutes away).

This place sets the bar and redefines the sushi experience. Brought straight to you the moment it's made, the warm rice and perfect fish cuts melts in your mouth. Trust them when they say no soy. If you want to experience the best around, go to sugar fish!

  • Amanda M.

No words for this amazing place. A+++++++! Fish is always consistently fresh and is always amazing me. The rice is warm, the fish melts in your mouth. I recommend getting the Trust me. The whole point of this restaurant by Nozawa is that you eat the sushi how you get it. NO extra ponzu sauce. Only soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. I always get the Trust me which comes with edamame, tuna sashimi, two pieces of salmon sushi, two pieces of albacore, two pieces of yellowtail and two pieces of halibut (which I usually substitute for salmon because their salmon is SO good ). Also comes with a toro handroll and baked crab hand roll. All for $35 (dinner price). Sugarfish sets the sushi standard high and makes it hard to go and enjoy sushi anywhere else. Check out our pictures of Sugarfish on Instagram @thefoodie411

We were there with my girlfriend last week and it was as good as any other shugarfish locations we have been. We usually order trust me nozawa and it's perfect portion for two of us. The atmosphere is great as usual. The only thing is we have waited for an hour and a half. That kills the pleaser for a bit though! So I would recommend that don't just decide to go shugarfish and have a nice sushi. Always count the wait time, especially during the weekend!

I found myself quite hungry after one of their $25 sushi combos and asked if I could just get a bowl of rice. They said it's only on the kid's menu and that they couldn't serve it to an adult. Which is insane. Go, the fish is tasty, but bring a sack lunch.

Great quality fish. Portions are very small. My wife weighs 120 pounds and she was still hungry after. As for me I could have ordered the same meal 3 more times and had room for desert.

The food was as good as any other Sugarfish, but I really did not like this location. The space felt really crammed, and the noise level seemed louder than other locations. Also, the servers seemed overwhelmed, and there was a quite a bit of confusion with our orders.

    (3)
  • Laura C.

Best sushi around! Don't go expecting to order a fried roll with sauces and toppings, because Sugarfish is all about fresh, clean tasting sashimi and hand rolls. The fish is so delicious, you don't need to add soy sauce or wasabi! Highly recommend reservations as the La Brea location is very tiny and usually busy.

My friend took me here for a birthday lunch and after hearing the hype, I was kind of scared. I feel like these places never live up to the hype, YANNO?! Anyway, this lived up to the hype and more. Honestly, I have trouble eaten sushi anywhere else now because nothing else tastes as fresh. Tuna sashimi was yum, blue crab hand roll was amazing, salmon was as fresh as ever.. I could go on forever. The bay scallops was the only one that was meh, but it was still good. I am currently in Florida for school and I won't be back in LA for 2 months but I already have my first meal planned- SUGARFISH!! And I'll take that with an extra order of the blue crab hand roll (trust me on that, you won't be disappointed).

Walked into this location at 1pm for lunch and was seated right away. 15 minutes after we were seated there were a handful of people waiting to be seated. Wheww we got lucky. My parents did the nozawa with the special being toro sushi. The waiter informed us that it would be $39 instead of the $35 listed on the menu because the special is toro. I opt for the the trust me with an order of albacore belly. Everything was nicely presented. The sushi just melts in your mouth. And yes, it's THAT good! IMO, this location is better than the one in downtown. The tuna sashimi I had in downtown was very rubbery and vein-y. I had to ask for water a couple of times which is why I docked a star since gratuity is included in my bill. I really enjoy sushi at sugarfish! Definitely recommended :)

  • Alex L.

I've been to three Sugarfish locations and they've been consistently great in food and service. I recommend getting the one of the three set menus they have for a great experience. I can almost guarantee you the daily special will be scallops. It's always scallops. I'm writing this review because we got some extra great service. One guest had to leave the table because she was taking an important call. The staff noticed and checked in and made sure the rest of our order would be prepared and came together so our party could enjoy together when our guest returned. Also, they made sure her food was fresh when she returned. Absolutely great service and we all appreciated it. They have a very loyal costumer and I can't wait to try the rest of the locations and to try to roll-only spinoff in downtown and the special set menu in the small room in the Beverly Hills location.

Went Monday around 5, the bar was empty and only one or two tables were taken. I asked if I could order a drink at the bar while waiting for my friend to come and the manager told me no! I can only sit there once my party arrives. I can understand that at busy times they seat people at bar for food and drinks, but considering it was empty and most of the drinks cost more than the food anyway. So why would you ask me to sit at a chair by the window as if J am at a doctor's office? Instead of sitting an your empty bar, ordering a drink and giving you $ They did however happily charged my phone for me which was very nice. My friend did not like the things she ordered but I personally loved the sushi roll and ordered a second one. The edamame was also good and not overly salted like most places.

There is no other restaurant that serves sushi as fresh as this place. Things to do when you go there: 1. Order the "trust me" 2. Get their iced green tea. So fresh tasting! 3. Don't use soy sauce on the salmon plate. The fish will melt in your mouth with flavor and texture. 4. If you're an east coaster or just like crab their last hand roll is awesome! The interior is romantic at night or a great little lunch place during the day. Even though the tables are super close you can't hear the entire conversation of the person next to you. The lighting also makes you feel more intimate with the person you're eating with. I've been to the other local LA chains and all have been consistent. There isn't one I like better. This one is just closer to my apartment. One last thing! Tips included on the check.

I love all sugarfish branches but I tend to go to this one and the one downtown the most. The fish is always really fresh and they have great options available. The rice is often slightly warm which is a bit different to other sushi places I go to but it's always perfectly cooked. The only negative is the fact the edamame portion is incredibly small. However the sushi is fantastic.

  • Alex J.

I went here for lunch on their second day of business but I haven't been to any of the other Sugarfish locations so can't compare on to the others. I can say that I had a good experience, however with service that was very helpful. We split the lobster and trust-me and all the items were fresh and tasty. To be honest having instructions on how to eat the various sushi is refreshingly helpful but also a bit intimating, I kept thinking I was eating something wrong even thought already knew many of the things in the instructions.

My best sushi experience in a long time. I devoured the Trust Me and trust me...it was worth it. Delicious, very fresh sushi. Perfect portions of rice underneath the sushi. Everything was pretty well-timed and delivered at the right temp or consistency.

Came here with a couple of friends and I had the Nozawa trust me which consists of: Organic Edamame Tuna Sashimi Albacore Sushi (2-pc) Salmon Sushi (2-pc) Snapper Sushi (2-pc) Yellowtail Sushi (2-pc) Halibut Sushi (2-pc) Toro Hand Roll Blue Crab Hand Roll "Daily Special" (2-pc) From my understanding they served it the way it's intended. no need to add soy-sauce/wasabi and the servers tell you which ones should be dipped. They give like 2-3 of each fish per plate and when you're done they'll replace the plate with an additional 2-3 until you've had the full course. I wouldn't say that was extremely full after the fact but was definitely satisfied with the meal. I do have to also say the rice used for the sushi was very different in a good way. Very simplistic yet you can tell every aspect is detailed. If you're looking for Americanized sushi (lion king rolls, crunchy rolls, etc) this is not the place to go. On a side note 16% service charge is automatically put on bill. We also parked at the little lot across the street.

Food is 5 stars. Probably the best sushi I've ever had. Our server Adam was great. Great personality, very knowledgable, and has obviously figured out how to enforce the rules of the restaurant without being a pretentious asshole. Sugarfish loses a star for me due to the rest of the waitstaff (minus the hostess she was great) The rules as I mentioned before are on the Menu they are simple and easy to follow. If I go to a restaurant like this I'm expecting to go for the experience and I want to do things their way otherwise why bother? What I hate is being told every five fucking seconds what those rules are over and over. Every single time something was brought to our table they told me "just a friendly reminder don't dip these in soy sauce it's not to be eaten that way". REASON I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS: 1. I can fucking read 2. Adam has already explained to us the rules 3. This is the 4th time you've told me 4. I'm not missing a chromosome even though you seem to think so. I will definitely be going back the food and service were both amazing but next time I'll be extremely blunt when I tell them I know the god damned rules already.

Gimme some suga suga!!!! This place is amazing! Everything was on point! Recommend the Nozawa trust me! My favorite is their white fish. Obsessed with their sushi rice and seaweed! It's literally perfection in every bite!

"Hollywood los angeles, hollywood los angeles" I actually want to give a 3, but it's still a 4 because I knew how it was going to go. I went today and got it to go because I was in a rush. I think they missed one of the sauces in my box based on the guide on what to put on what. Anyways, it's pretty much the same as my other review. The fish is still done right, yadi yadi yadah. It just doesn't taste as good as when you get it and eat it immediately. SO DON'T DO TO GO, unless you really have to, BECAUSE IT TASTES BETTER THERE. Which can be said about almost any restaurant. I'm honestly only writing this just to say I was here.

Of course, the quality of the fish is amazing. And the pieces are carefully presented, sauced with restraint, and melt in your mouth. My only complaint is that I just don't feel great eating any entire meat and white rice meal. I need some good hearty veggies on there. So this is a once-in-a-while situation for me. I feel like I need to go to Real Food Daily or Cafe Gratitude the next day.

Great sushi. Had a great selection and assortment options if you're interested in trying a bunch of sushi. My boyfriend and I shared the "Trust Me" selection. We got a Pete if edamame and 10 or 12 pieces of sushi each. Good deal, you save a few bucks.

The service was terrible, so rude, so rushed, so detached. The food was subpar, we were starving at the end. The selection was great but the servings ridiculous. Way too over hyped and not worth it.

This is by far one of the best sushi I've ever had!!! I've been to DTLA and Studio City locations and so far, it's been consistent all around. Arrive early because Sugarfish does not take reservations. Anything you order here will be top fish and super fresh. I loved everything on the "Trust Me" menu, but my favorite pieces are the Albacore Sushi, Toro Hand Roll, and the Blue Crab Handroll. Great quality that you could taste! I liked how the Blue Crab Hand Roll was last-- it was nice to end the meal with a warm item. Make sure you eat the hand rolls right away while the seaweed is still crisp! Best Plates: Toro, Albacore, Halibut, Giant Scallop, Blue Crab Hand Roll, Lobster Hand Roll, Albacore Belly...ANYTHING! The only downside here is that they add a 16% gratuity and then tax on said gratuity. They're selling themselves short because I would have tipped at least 20% for the excellent service.

  • Leo H.

Seriously the best sushi I have ever had. Simple and simplistic but the flavor is amazing. This place doesn't have sushi rolls with tons of crazy combinations, but the fish is so fresh it melts in your mouth like butter. We always do the "trust me" option where they bring out pieces of different fish from an assorted menu. Would highly suggest!

Hands down the worst Sugarfish amongst the chain. Was quoted an hour to an hour and a half wait and still wasn't seated after our time came up. The hostesses were unorganized, not apologetic and have no idea how to give customer service. This location brings down this restaurant so many notches. Over it! Thanks for wasting my night, please give me money for my babysitter

Solid food. Best sashimi I've ever had (not a huge fan of sashimi but these were really tasty!). My girl and I both ordered the trust me (really like the fact that there were only 3 choices, I am very indecisive on what to order most of the time...) and it's just about right for us, neither too full nor still wanting more.

  • Nicole O.

I am almost afraid to give this place an honest review!! Basically, this restaurant has 3 options all called "trust me" for different prices. Don't like snapper? Allergic to shellfish? They don't care. No substitutions. Want sauce on the side? Sorry! They don't do that. Granted- the sushi came out great, I really enjoyed my meal.... But for the outrageous prices, if I want something a bit spicer is it that big a deal?? I get they're the experts. But everyone's palate is different, and I didn't like feeling inferior because my tastes were not "refined" enough. Also, the food comes out in their order- and you're pressured to eat it right away while it's hot, before other things come out. Want to try everything at once? Sorry. It just felt like a struggle and impossible to enjoy. Kudos to the people who did like being forced to spend their money a specific way.

Loved this location!! Service was better here than any other Sugarfish that I have been to. I came in for lunch on a Friday around 2pm and there was a short wait. Once seated we ordered immediately because we were starving and the food came out quickly. They messed up our order but gave us a complimentary sashimi and were very apologetic. Great service, the same wonderful quality fish that I love and a good price!

First and foremost, I have to apologize to my friend Sharona. She practically lives, breathes and prays to Sugarfish thus this review will not settle well with her...just like my dinner. Friends, yelp, everyone raved about the freshness of Sugarfish and their amazing rice. I must admit that I don't eat crazy weird sushi (i.e. eel) or seaweed and prefer most of my sushi with either ponzu or eel sauce but I HAD to give this place a try. I was so insanely disappointed. Again I understand that this is not the kind of sushi I'm used but my meal did not end up as "fresh and melt in your mouth" as I had imagined. I typically really enjoy sashimi but couldn't even finish the tuna sashimi that came with my "Trust Me" order. The rest of the sushi, some were worse than others. The yellowtail might have been the worst of all, quoting the BF "it tastes like the beach", and he is way less picky than I am. The two sushi pieces that were okay at best was the salmon and the albacore. By the time it was hand roll time, I was close to done with the place. Hating seaweed, I unrolled the tuna roll and tried to eat the inside. The rice had a lingering taste of seaweed which finally made me wave my white flag. I was done. Didn't even look at the last hand roll they brought over. I personally thought my dinner was a complete and utter waste of $30 plus tax and tip. Clearly I'm in the very small minority. but it goes to show you that even when you're the best of the best, you will still gross out the select few.

I don't normally eat sushi but this place is something else. The interior is cool and the fish melts in your mouth. Full of flavor and their set menus are great. Take the pain out of choosing from a menu, I only know what half the dishes are. Great value but the only let down is you can't reserve a table and can only be seated when the 'whole' party arrives. It's not so bad when it's two of you mid week but weekends can be crazy, especially at this location as there's no bar area to wait comfortably in. Bev hill location has a seating/bar area for waiting guest.

Pay per space parking lot is right across the street. Trust Me and Trust Me lite...you can't go wrong! This Sugarfish doesn't get too packed if you go before 7 PM. I love meeting friends here after work for dinner because you can usually get seated with no wait (around 6/6:30). All the Sugarfish locations have the freshest sushi, and this spot is no exception. Event after eating the full Trust Me, you don't feel grossly stuffed! Just satisfied by all of the dishes that come out, perfectly complimenting one another, with great timing and service. Only bad thing is...I always want more!

...... first and probably my last time i will go out of my way to get to Sugarfish Note: i am a huge fan of sashimi the highlight of the night was..... being told it will be a 45minute wait. I then proceeded to order a bottle of sake to sip on with friends while we wait and then we were seated in 10 minutes. from that point on... i ordered from their trust me menu. but Probably should've stuck to ordering sashimi a la carte. The sushi and hand rolls just did not do it for me.

I mean come on..This place was amazing. Yes the sushi is fresh, yes the sushi tasty and the service is awesome. I have to say, if you can afford it here then do so. There are some hood sushi places that I like too, but when you're talking quality this is the place to go. 2 people we spent about $119 with alcohol. That included the tip, but they include the tip in their bill which I don't mind. I usually tip 20% so its a savings for me. I highly recommend if you have the money, if you are on a budget you should probably avoid this place. GOOD LUCK!

OVERRATED! It's very fresh Sushi, nothing more, nothing less. Wait in a line outside to get a seat?! Ha! It's definitely not worth that ! Sushi Roku is just as good and has a larger selection of fish... and doesn't have the annoying loud dance music playing in the background;-/ No need to make a special trip to try this restaurant. It's truly nothing special.

Really only awesome if you want ligit sushi. The uni was super fresh from Santa Barbara and the scallops melted in my mouth. Pricey sushi but, for the quality it's totally worth it! Servers will all help each other out. The floor manager was a snob when we asked for something because we thought he was out server and gave us a dirty look. Wait is long so give yourself ample time to spend there.

Ive been to like 3 or so Sugarfish's. They're all good. ALL OF THEM. This one is a little small but that really doesn't matter. The sushi is beyond any commonly used positive adjective. The service is attentive and quick. The ambience is dim and even though its crowded and chatty, you dont notice it. Theres no reason NOT to go to any Sugarfish unless you have zero sense of what's good. That's a great reason to go here actually. If you take someone to Sugarfish and they aren't putty in your hands afterwards, dump them!

I'm sad to write this review because I've eaten at the Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey locations many time, and they're 5 stars phenomenal... This location opened up closer to home so I tried it out last night expecting the same amazing experience I've had at Sugarfish... it was anything but. I had to wait an hour to be seated which is absolutely fine, it's a busy place and they were upfront about the wait, but when we sat down they rushed us so fast I had three plates at once and I'm by no means a slow eater. I was actually out of breath from trying to eat so fast and the waitress even asked if I wanted to put the sushi all on one plate to make more room for others coming out. We decided to try the special which was "sweet shrimp." It not only tasted like congealed fish, I almost had to spit it out. Ok fine, not everything can be a winner but my boyfriend actually threw up the whole meal about an hour later and I think it's safe to say the sweet shrimp left a bad taste in our mouth. I had a gift certificate to use since it's one of my fav restaurants and when we went to use it they tacked on a 16 percent tip. I always tip 20, but I thought it was such a cheesy move I definitely did not feel inclined to add that 4 percent. Disappointed all around.

I've been here 3 times, and the final verdict is in: not worth it. The first time, I had the Trust Me combo, per their suggestion. I was impressed on two fronts: 1) the service is top notch and 2) the rice was excellent. Where it failed was the fish, which is the main part of the meal when you eat sushi/sashimi. Many of their dishes put on quite a bit of soy sauce or ponzu sauce. My instinct tells me that this is to cover up the taste, but if it's good quality fish, why would you cover it up? It's like marinating a good steak--you don't do it. Certain fish are extremely fishy, so you would use that or green onions/scallions to offset the strong taste, but tuna is not one of them. The second visit, I tried ordering individual pieces instead of the combo, but the same result. The albacore belly was fairly good, since they had that available. It did melt in my mouth a little. My third visit, though, was very lackluster and also just bad. They said they had toro that day, so I asked whether it was otoro or chutoro, thinking that if you're going to charge a premium on your fish, you should know what you're selling. The waiter dodged the question saying it was just the tuna belly--I'm not gonna complain about that since they are just working here and not necessarily experts. The rice this time around was average, so I didn't have that to brighten my visit. But when the "toro" came, it was the saddest piece of tuna I've ever seen. Sushi should have tails over the edge of the rice. It came as a square, so that means they cut off some of my fish (and probably used those pieces for the tuna sashimi--the sashimi is made of small pieces of tuna dunked in soy sauce). But even more of a travesty: this was not toro. Not an ounce of fat (see pic below). It tasted like normal tuna. Fatty tuna with no fat. Service was still good, but I'd like to enjoy my meal. Literally. I'll give them this: if the customer doesn't know, they will make a good profit on this business. I should have complained, but I know what can go on in the back of the restaurant, and I'd rather not have any surprises when they try to serve a second round of food. I would've given 2 stars for service and rice, but the bait and switch with the toro is unacceptable.

My husband and I came here on a Sunday night after some friends had raved about this place to us. We were not disappointed! I ordered the Trust Me set and my husband ordered the Nozawa set. Every dish that came out was beautiful, fresh, and melted in your mouth!! I especially loved that the menu says that dishes that already have sauce on it are not meant to be dipped in soy sauce. Also, the wasabi was freshly grated... and what a difference it made! We will be back again~ thanks Sugarfish!

First yelp review! Couldn't resist letting everyone know about this gem. I've long enjoyed the DTLA location, so when I moved to miracle mile and found out about the new location (walking distance!) I was thrilled. I found the La Brea location to be every bit as good on all levels - food, service, ambiance. To start I should mention that normally my taste in sushi is of the avocado/spicy tuna variety; However when the cut and quality of the fish is as excellent as it is here then why cover it up? For lunch you can't beat the "trust me" set menu. I usually choose the "light" version, as it's just enough to fill me up without reaching the I'mSoFullI'mGoingToBeSick level. I have a shellfish allergy, and they make it very easy to substitute the shrimp for my choice of fish. On top of that the staff is quick, friendly, and the perfect mix of not interrupting my conversation, but still refilling my drink or ginger as needed. You can get in and out anywhere from 30min - an hour without feeling rushed, which in my opinion makes it a great lunch spot. Decor is relaxed modern with various woods mixed with whites for an elegant, yet unpretentious vibe. Overall I'm a customer for life!

There's always about a half hour wait around dinner time, so keep that in mind. This is seriously the best sushi in the area. It melts in your mouth. SO GOOD. The soy sauce is good, and the wasabi is excellent. I always judge wasabi by how well it dissolves into the soy sauce, and this wasabi easily blended in. My friend and I split the Nozawa Trust Me, which comes with edamame, 12 pieces of sushi, and 2 hand rolls. It was the perfect amount for the two of us. The host was very nice, and very pleasant to interact with. Our waiter was very nice, as well, until the end. Our meal was brought out in sections, first the edamame, then 6 pieces, another 6, and then the hand rolls. After finishing our hand rolls, our waiter basically rushed us to leave. It was just very off-putting. Overall, the food is what I'm there for, and it is amazing, so of course I will go again. The Blue Crab Hand Roll is the my favorite!

  • David M.

Smallish compared to other locations and good luck waiting 2 hours for a table on a Saturday night. On the plus side, yes the fish is consistent with their other locations but I have no burning desire to come back to this location as the Beverly Hills location has a bar and heated patio waiting area (something this location desperately needs). Service was 5 stars (our drinks were refilled quickly and our orders were correct) but they need to figure out how to manage these crowds. Simply having people crowd the front entrance is annoying, especially for anyone unfortunate enough to be seated there.

I've converted non sushi eaters, as well as created sugar fish addicts with this restaurant. The fish is delicious and melts in your mouth. The rice is warm and perfectly seasoned. I don't even use the soy sauce with this sushi. This place is a must try!

  • Betty C.

I finally ate here the other day and it was amazing! I got the 17 dollar "trust me". It came with edamame, so delicious, then tuna sashimi, one of the most delectable things I've ever tasted ever ever, and then three pieces of sushi, and finally a toro hand roll with crispy seaweed wrapper. Every item was perfectly delicious and the waiter and waitress were very friendly and sweet. The waiter brought pickled ginger and fresh spicy horseradish to the table when he brought out the edamame. The sashimi doesn't need anything, the flavor is amazing on its own, but I really like the spicy horseradish on some of the sushi. I could have ordered more sushi, it was so good, but I was in a hurry and on a tight budget. So this was the perfect fancy, decadent quick bite for me. I can't wait to eat here again and order two of those tuna sashimis and try more of their sushi rolls and what not. Soooo yummy!

Awesome sushi spot in LA. They have courses ranging from $20-$40 per person. The $40 course will get you full and it's a bit pricey, but you pay for what you get. The quality of the sashimi is very high, and their sticky rice is the best i've ever had. I sat in the bar, and the service was attentive. The plates were taken as soon as we finished each course menu and the next items came in succession. Very nice place. Expect to wait over an hour during peak hours. There are no reservations.

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE GLUTEN INTOLERANT. My sister and I had lunch here today. I have eaten at the Santa Monica location numerous times and it's generally fine. My sister has Celiac and as a result cannot have soy sauce. She just uses gluten free soy sauce or salt. We were told that the kitchen would not give her salt because the pretentious chef does not want his recipes changed or altered (um, ok...) and that they do not have gluten free soy sauce. So, everything she/we ate was basically flavorless and our braindead waitress cared less. Then, our waitress made numerous mistakes with our order. Best part? The gratuity that was added to our bill. Another crappy pretentious LA meal (with super annoying people all around you, to boot). This place is a total fad and I personally cannot wait until it's over.

    (1)
  • Sharon Y.

Simply the best sushi ever. Warm, friendly service as well. If you go at off hours (in between lunch and dinner), you don't have to wait. Otherwise, don't arrive too hungry, because you'll be waiting a while and watching some delicious dishes pass you by. Then again, once you get your food, it's totally worth the wait.

If you want amazing sushi this is the place to go. Ordered the "trust me" and trust me everything was delicious. Everything we ate was so fresh and the rice was perfectly warm. I'm not the biggest fan of hand rolls but the ones we had may have changed my mind for good. The service was great too and our server gets bonus points because he's from the bay. I highly recommend this place.

Had heard a lot about this place so we went for dinner last Friday night. The "good": Service was solid and very attentive waitstaff, which is always appreciated when dining out. The "middle": Kind of cool to have a set menu, was intrigued and open-minded to try it this way. The vibe was pretty cool, nice atmosphere and lots of young peeps/couples/etc. The "bad": The food - particularly the fact that hot rice ruined some of the sushi servings and all of the hand rolls - it should be room temperature, if this was a one-time mistake then that is quite unfortunate... if not then not sure what to say lol... For all the positive comments and hype I've heard about this place, it is definitely a cut below Sushi Gen and Yuzu, and light years behind Chiba. From the clientele observed, this place, which is a chain, appears to be tailored toward people who probably are not too informed about, or aware of, sushi and maki and just want a cool environment with a preselected menu, some beer and sake to have a "sushi" experience. Oh yeah and it smells weird.

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. The fish is so fresh and when you combine that with the warm rice, it's the perfect combination and it just MELTS in your mouth. I highly recommend going with one of their TRUST ME options because they definitely know what they're doing.

We loved Sugarfish -- of SANTA MONICA. The waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Sure, make it interesting and seem "in demand" by building a space too small for your neighborhood's demand. Forcing people to stand outside because the owner chose a space that's too small for the area: congrats on making your place seem more in demand than it is. This location has service as cold as the fish served. Rude waitress. Threw the food down. She didn't identify what was on our plate; we had to ask. 3 served out of 4. 4th served eventually. Completely ignored us once the "Trust Us" menu was served We wanted more food, drinks. We had to flag people down. Too dark. As in cannot-read-the-menu dark. Fortunately, we loved and had been to the SM one, and therefore, knew what to order. But we would NEVER have been able to actually read the menu. Spend some money on lighting, please. And finally, la piece de resistance: hostess was completely flummoxed when we asked her to call us a cab. She replied, "I have to wait for someone to get off the phone." Huh? Then our neglectful waitress offered us this 'insightful' tip: do you know Uber or Lyft? Try them." Yeah, thanks. NOW you pay attention to us?

  • Sara L.

Always packed, we were walking by and hungry, and were surprisingly able to get a seat at the bar in the small spot in under 30 minutes. Cool! The fish is fresh and good and the rice *is* pretty great. Kind of annoyingly scene-y (not as bad as Izakaya, but...), but the food is definitely solid. I mean, you can get a LOT of fabulous sushi in Los Angeles. So while there wasn't anything innovative about it and it's way too crowded and noisy for a leisurely date, it's a fine spot for a sushi dinner and you know what you'll get.

    (4)
  • Matt G.

This place is good, but it is also the most overrated sushi restaurant in Los Angeles. If you are looking to spend $40+ per person, I would recommend going to Nobu or Sushi Roku. Otherwise, Sugarfish is a great place for a date, dinner, or just to look hipster and tell your friends that you "just are at Sugarfish." Enjoy!

    (3)
  • Sweta P.

Best sushi I have had!! Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I go there regularly and get a bottle of wine with dinner, and getting thru a wine bottle with dinner takes longer than they expect, so they are very quick on course and rush you to keep to their table rotation.

    (4)
  • Daniel K.

If only the service was as good as the food. The waits are unbearable and the seating arrangements makes little to no sense. After all what type of place will call and wait 30 minutes for someone who departed to claim their table. Makes no sense right? However, not even the food can save this bizarre seating policy that seems asinine that only this branch abides by this whereas their other fine locations zips people in and out fairly quickly. No food, no matter how good it is, is worth waiting 90 minutes for. It's a suckers delight. Go to the other locations

    (2)
  • Michael V.

Finally got a chance to dine here. Seems like everyone orders the trust me menu. You can order one of three. We ordered the one that is suppose to be if you are really really hungry which comes with 3 extra portions of rice. The rice under the fish is warm and large which in my opinion overpowers the fish.

    (3)
  • Britt M.

This place is outstanding. The fish is extremely fresh, and they don't overdo it with the flavors. All of the fish is able to shine on its own. Their rice is to die for, I've never had rice so soft, warm, and flavorful. I would absolutely go back here again and again. The service was spot on, they were fast and efficient, and had great suggestions. The seating can be a little tight, but who cares--it's a sushi joint. Loved it!!

Although this is a great restaurant with delicious fish, my main gripe is that while I'm usually able to eat at most sushi restaurants, I am allergic to non-organic soy and the chefs douse their nigiri in soy!! Had I known that ahead of time, I probably would not have gone here. I felt bad having ordered the Nozawa Trust Me, and was a little nervous to send it back due to the strict notes on their menu, so I ate it anyway and now I'm paying for it with hives all over my body. At least my mouth didn't swell up! In the end, not worth it. Most sushi restaurants do not add soy to their nigiri or sashimi!!! Very disappointed. All aside, the albacore and halibut were my favorites. Salmon was bleh (being from Seattle, I'm very picky about salmon). Blue crab roll was not my favorite at all.

Fish was fresh and quite a bit better in quality than many places I have been. If there would be any complaint it would be that some sauces where a little over powering and menu selection was smaller than most. This being said, it was really good and will be worth going back to.

This is by far my favorite sushi restaurant of all time (and sushi is my favorite food). The location is great, the restaurant is cozy, the workers are very personable, the sushi is the best, AND it's affordable. The store manager Kyu was very welcoming and helpful, too. When I come here, I usually order the Trust Me, and it's pretty filling. If you're looking for an all-around great sushi spot in LA, I highly recommend Sugarfish on La Brea.

Best sushi I have ever had! This is my new favorite sushi spot. The fish fresh and they tell you exact how to eat the different sushi pieces. Try the trust me plate you will not regret it.

what i like about sushi places is going to the bar and watching them make your meal- you're not going to get that here. We saw one asian person in the kitchen and he was managing. the food is good, the prices were very affordable- but it's still a chain. the fish is good and the blue crab roll was a nice way to end the meal (except the hamachi- very stringy) but they need to re-think their host- he was the rudest person, not at all helpful- ruined the experience from the start.

This place has delicious sushi, wonderful severs, and simple decor. They warm up the rice, which is unusual and tasty. They don't have miso soup, so just a heads up if that is a deal-breaker. The only reason I removed star is because it is on the more expensive side.

The fish is decent quality, but the service is extremely slow. The rice was also really warm when served. We ordered the $35/person "trust me" where they provide a selection of sushi. I wasn't full by the end and not really pleased, however, because of the fish quality, I did leave a 3 star rating. Probably wouldn't come back unless it was the only sushi place in the area.

I am writing my first very yelp review to express the sheer bliss I feel while eating the albacore belly sushi at Sugarfish. Mind you everything here is awesome, but the albacore belly just takes it to another level. Sugarfish is everything sushi should be: clean, simple, beautiful, and delicious.

I've tried every sushi joint in New York and Los Angeles. Without a doubt, Sugarfish is now my favorite.

Delicious! Excellent fish. Great environment. The rice is PERFECT! Making the fish all that much yummier. While you don't get an authentic sushi house feel, there's an excellent laid back ambience. I would recommend this to anyone who likes sushi! Oh and they have free wifi.

I normally don't eat fish, but when I do, the last thing I want is the fishy taste in my mouth. Sugarfish has some off the best quality fish around. Raw fish never tastes so good. And the price is well worth the quality. No miso soup, which sucks, but I'll deal with it. That reminds me, another thing that sucks in a great way - Dan Farr.

The combination of the slightly warm rice and always fresh fish is fantastic. It's basically idiot proof... Everything comes perfectly seasoned and the one's without sauce you can dip on soy but the fish is generous in size and sweet so it really doesn't need it. I'm never disappointed!!!!
